Mobiles with mp3
Posted by: Seanf on 12 September 2006
My mobile contract is up for renewal and am entitled to a new phone. The only accessory I'm interested in is an mp3 player. Which of the following would you recommend? My last Nokia needed a special connection for their own brand of earphones. Do any models use standard jack plugs?
The choices:
Motorola V3X or SLVRL7, LG U8500, Sony Ericson K610i or W810i, BenQ Siemens SL75 or M81, O2 Xda or O2 Ice, Nokia 6230i
Cheers

Sean,
I have a Sony Ericsson K608i or something like that.
It plays MP3's, comes with a proprietry connector for headphones though I have to admit to not having played with it. I think the Motorola I used to use has a standard headphone socket but never used it.
It's the easiest phone I've used yet and personally think it's better than Nokia's I've used. Considering it's a videophone, battery life is nearly a week and it weighs nothing.
Oh yeah, you can stick memory cards in it as well.
I use the camera for quick still's and video's which it's rather good for, use a normal digital camera for when I need better quality.
Steve.

A mate of mine has the SE W810i. Very nice phone, high quality build, that's built around it's MP3 playing ability. Via a supplied cable adapter, you also get a 3.5mm headphone socket, so you can choose your own phones. If you ever need its, it's also got a pretty capable 2mp camera built in too.
If you feel flush and fancy being flash, there's also Nokia's N91.

My lad seems taken with these SE phones. He's just upgraded to one with a 3.2MPixal camera.I have the option of his old one but it seems awfully complicated for a phone!

Avoid SE phones if you want to use anything other than the supplied headphones. I gave up playing MP3's with my K750i. Also the screens are still poor in direct light (IMHO).

Use my SE K750i with optional in ear headphones with 3.5mm jack adaptor. I added a 1GB memory stick for £40. Has the 2MP camera, but most useful to me is the RDS FM radio which I use every day while riding my bicycle to work,
cheers,
Paul.
ps has great battery life.

Thanks for the replies. I am kind of tempted by the SE810, I'd read that it is a good player and am more so after hearing that I can use my own headphones. Although this does go against what SteveGa says: Avoid SE phones if you want to use anything other than the supplied headphones, bit confused now, is this something that doesn't apply to all SEs?. Maybe I should visit a shop and have a look at the phone and ask about it. I seem to have narrowed down the choices at least.
Thanks again and more suggestions are welcome.

My Nokia N80 came with an adaptor to connect its interface with a 3.5 m jack. I've since plugged my Sennheiser HD 600s into it and the sound is rather good even if the volume is limited.

Seanf,
Just picked up an 810i. It has a two part headphone thingy. Bit one plugs into the machine and terminates in a switch/3.5mm socket. Bit two is the headphones. You can therefore use your own.
Very nice bit of kit BTW. I've added a 2GB Memory Stick for £30 which gives it half the memory of my iPod. Plus phone, plus camera, plus RDS radio etc. .... neat.
The business end of the supplied 'phones appears to be the similar to the Sony MDR EX71's which IMHO are a very good headphone provided you remember to push well down your lughole for close coupling. I used to use those before I bought my Ety's.

Just to add that the SE comes with a very neat app to manage the music on the phone.
Three panes: souce, transfer and phone. The source shows your iTunes stuff if you have it as well as other folder/files and your CD for ripping.
The transfer list allows you to tweak the target bit rate if you wish and shows you if you've too dragged over much to load onto the phone.
Finally one click and it shoves it over to the phone albeit arsingly slow. It's taken me about 90 minutes so far and I still have another 850MB to go!

Don't you have a USB2 card reader for the phone's memory stick? Then you could transer direct to the stick from the computer, then plonk the stick straight into the phone. It should be a lot quicker to transfer your files that way.

That dawned on me an hour or so ago and I've just ordered one off eBay!

That was another problem with the Nokia I had (6230, gave up the ghost just after the guarantee ran out), putting files on it was painfully slow and not always successful and I ended up sticking the card in the PC to speed things up.
I'm still tempted by the 810i, it does seem closer to what I want at the price I'm willing to pay: I will have to cough up 20 Es but it comes with (cough) Loudspeakers and seems to be the only model from my choices that gains attention.
I'll try to get a look and feel of it on Saturday (if I don't bump into Fritz First).

I have a nokia N80, not too shabby playing eAAC+ through etymotic ER-4P headphones.
The files can be transferred via a USB-pop port cord that came with the phone.
The menus took a bit of getting used to as this phone can do just about everything.
