Vinyl in Central London

Posted by: Rich Conroy on 12 September 2005

I normally go vinyl hunting in Berwick Street in Soho. I visited for the first time in a few months on saturday (after a visit to the Won Kies in Wardour Street) and noticed that "the usual suspects" contained what seemed a lot less vinyl than usual (and the area around the fruit and veg market contained even more prostitutes than normal!!!!). Can anyone reccommend vinyl shops in central London to try? I'm aware there's a few in Cambden and a place called Beano's in Croyden. Can anyone give me some info on these or others? There just seems to be a lot less vinyl around. Or am I wrong?
Cheers
Rich.

Rough Trade and Honest Jon's on Portabello rd are worth the journey (An interesting soundtrack and sixties shop is also worth a visit).

Talking only about vinyl ....

Intoxica is the one you mean? I find them a bit over priced, but good for lounge / 60s etc.

Depending on genre there are loads of other shops, like Rough Trade in Covent Garden, Eukatech, Plastic Fantastic, Trax, Kokon To Zai (very dear) also.

Camden High Street and market are good for second hand, not so great for new.

Don't forget to try HMV and Virgin on Oxford Street, they can sometimes surprise with old warehouse finds. Kinetic on Little Portland Street

Sounds of the Universe just off Berwick Street is good too (home of Soul Jazz)

Smallfish in Old Street for electronica

Islington has petered out, with only a couple of vaguely decent shops

Good luck hunting!
