Deep Purple concert

Posted by: Lightkeeper on 13 October 2003

Hi,

at 6. of december, will be Deep Purple concert in my town. What should I expect of today group members which are: Don Airey, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Steve Morse, Ian Paice?

Should I go? Did anyone been some time ago at their concert? Will they play all the best hits from Gillan phase (I believe yes) ?

I would appreciate your experiences.
Thank you,
Ozren

I haven't heard this line up, but Deep Purple Mk2 is one of my favourite groups of this era. But without Blackmore and Lord it's not really the same.

I'm sure that they will play plenty of the old songs though, so I guess you might find it interesting. I don't know whether or not Gillan's voice is still up to the job.

Yes, it's a question I ask myself, not about DP in particular, but all these bands that are going on and on into the Twilight Zone. I saw Page & Plant a while back, and saw the last Pink Floyd tour which was way back, and of course Yes, who tour now more than ever it seems.
I believe that if you prepare yourself for the worst, you may be pleasantly surprised. If it were me, I'd go. I saw Staus Quo a couple of years back on the insistance of some friends, and wanted to be beamed up within three minutes. I don't know if I'll ever recover from the full horror of Quo hits in a Jive-Bunny style.
I saw a tour poster for The Moody Blues, and it looked like The Five Santa's.

I think sometimes you just have to let go. I saw them at their peak (3 times in 71-73) and frankly prefer to enjoy them through their albums of that period. Same with Led Zep. I have no more wish to see them reformed than to see Marilyn Monroe exhumed.
Enjoy what they were, which was truly fabulous.

On a much less altruistic note seeing them in their current state just reminds me how old, fat, and decrepit I've got myself since then!

Maybe there's a reason they are playing Zagreb rather than New York City or London?

By all means go, and be healed of this festering wound. Probably they've been touring longer than Elvis (the fat one).

I'm with Herm on this one. Go, but be prepared for lengthy breaks between songs while the lads unbolt themselves from their custom Zimmer "rockstarerectus" frames and leave the stage to empty colostomy bags, squeeze out incontinence pads, neck bucket-loads of pain killers, recharge pacemaker batteries etc.

Thank you all.

What a funny coincidence happened yesterday evening. On local TV was been some Purple concert from this year, but don't know where. A little bit strange to me is that Lord was been there, while for Zagreb concert I have read that he will not come, who knows, maybe is that some mistake. I simply could not imagine how will they sound without him, because he was a base of Purple sound.
Let's back to yesterday TV concert. Well, first of all I was heard that Gillan won't sing Child In Time never again because he was not satisfied with his voice and he can't strech voice so much at this ages. They was start with "My Woman From Tokyo", which was sound just like from old records, except Gillan's voice is a little bit... shy I'd say.
After that they was started with several songs for which I never heard of, some new material which is boring. After that they was made a fantastic introuduction to Lazy, all the people went crazy and Gillan was blow out the best he can do from himself, then "Smoke On The Water", "Ted The Mechanic", "Speed King", "When A Blind Man Cries" etc. Just when they say good bay to audience, they was come back to the podium very fast and Paice started to slam the drums so fucking hard and extremly fast, then comes the "guitarist" whoewer he was (maybe Don Airey or Steve Morse)and the whole band including Glover and Gillan getting mad through the Highway Star. All in all, I was enjoying it pretty much, so I believe that I will at the concert too. It's a fact that Gillan voice is a little bit humble and not that loud, but it is still Gillan and anybody can sing like him even today. There is other thing which is not good to me, or better say it is not my taste and it is not in a Purple style and this thing is guitarist which prolong every solo and agressively tries to take attention to himslef (like, hey, look at me mom, I play with Purple). That was evident that guitarist is very good, but as I know very good how Ritchie plays, I can say that hte new one is slower and he can't complete so demanding task to be quality replacement for Blackmore. So I can say that Blackmore is a genius and the new one is a very good guitar player, hard to find today.

I was decided to go.
Thank you all. Smile

Herman,
it seems that nothing can pass without your cinysm. Well, here are some of the towns where Purple was making concerts this year http://www.thehighwaystar.com/tourdates/
They were been in September in Brazil. USA will come later as I was found somewhere.

Yes, how about it?

If should appear cinical sometimes, it's because my heart has been broken too many times (though not by Deep Purple). Minky however was born a cinic. Trust me, his mom and dad were cinics. That's why I like him.
