Honda Civic Type-R?
Posted by: Paul Hutchings on 20 May 2005
Car hunt goes on
All cheap BMW coupes at dealers are sheds. AN Elise would be lovely but there's that "need something sensible" factor, plus running/storing three cars would be difficult.
So.. Second hand Honda Civic Type-R?
Seems they can be had from dealers for about £11-12k, and give hatchback practicality with mini-rocket performance. I'm also thinking Japanese so deathly reliable?
Other than the usual "try one and read the reviews" can anyone tell me anything about them?
cheers,
Paul

I have driven one and it out performs a VW Golf GTI.
The paintwork is hell of a lot better too.
Mrs Mick has one ear marked for her next car.

My Golf is a 2002 1.4, lovely car, but it's a 1.4
I'd expect a Type-R to "slightly" out perform it
What was the drive like Mick (assuming we're talking the Type-R) - being a sporty car I'm a little cautious that it might be "hard work" with the gears and such like?

Easy non technical reply is that it goes like a bat out of hell.
It handles superbly and with the gear lever half way up the dash, there is loads of room in the front.
Very much a young mans car.

It's really a bloody marvellous vfm car. Yes, as with most jap. cars, reliability is not an issue, & servicing at a honda dealer is pretty painless too. Check with your insurance company for a quote. You have to rev the engine fairly hard before it feels truly quick, & although that can be fun, sometimes when you are going down a motorway at a fairly constant speed it isn't as relaxing or refined as a golf gti/beemer, etc. It isn't the ideal long distance cruiser car, so think about how you drive most of your miles, m-way, or a-road, etc.It can be a bit noisy inside, & I would want one with aircon (an optional extra).Oh, & the standard stereo is abysmal.
I can think of a lot worse ways of spending that sort of dough on a car. In fact, I can think of few better ways.

I just bought a pair of Mk5 1.4 Golfs. Went to mine from a Mk4 150bhp GT Tdi.
Loss of power - yep.
Loss of "badge" - yep.
Loss of driving pleasure - nope.
OK, no mass torque and less acceleration but the chassis is superb and the engine is silky smooth. Usual Golf attributes - ie. everything where you expect it to be.
The internal space is cavernous and the seats are great.
I am actually enjoying it more.
(Still hankering after "my" 911 though ..................)

So perfectly logical for Mrs. Mick then. Stellar performance right up to 1mph below the speed limit.
Somehow, I thought a Range Rover would have been the vehicle of choice.......

I only need 2 seats now a days and tomorrow I am looking at a Boxter. I have always liked the quality of a Porsche and quite fancy driving one.

Why a boxster?
Surely a car capable of twice the limit would be wasted on you?.
They do a nice line in Rovers now, you can get them quite cheap as well,

The Boxster is only half a "real" Porsche and you will be regarded as a Porsche owner that cannot afford a 911.
Buy her a 350Z.
EDIT : Sorry Mick - misread your post. You'll need to buy either a Fiat Multipla or a Honda FRV. Two front seats for you and one for her.

LTD, could be worse - Cayenne ?

Oh yes. Hence my suggestion of the Range Rover.
I'd rather have the V10 Tourag D over the Cayenne.

Mick- get a boxster. Don't worry about the "couldn't get a 911" thing. There may be some truth in that, but I've owned 6 porsches, including 3 911's (964c2,964cab,& 993c2)& for the last year or two have had a 2.7 boxster. It is 85% of a 911 for 50% of the cost, & the chassis balance is better than a 911. A 2nd hand boxster is a truly great vfm, cheap to run car.Insurance is cheaper than my previous car(merc clk320),does 30mpg, servicing costs are minimal. OK so one day I may get a 996 or 997, but it is getting more & more difficult to justify the cost differential. It's back to the law of diminishing returns again.
Oh, & as for the cayenne,I'd have to give it an open verdict at best, but a toe-rag instead? Come off it! How much will that be worth in 3 or 4 years time, compared to the cayenne? The difference in depreciation could buy a whole lot of nice naim gear.
matt.

You don't really know Mick then. 85% of anything is not good enough for the Parry's .............
Would still rather have a 350Z to a Boxster.
Would prefer a 911 to both.
Cayenne should never have been made. That's what a Range Rover is for.

Cayenne?
I don't think I've seen anything more ridiculous. A 911 on big wheels basically. What a duffer and right up there with the 914 IMHO.
I would rather have a Toe Rag. Wouldn't care about the depreciation, at least I wouldn't look like an idiot!

I just bought a 1 yr old 350Z yesterday, I can't get the grin off my face yet. It's a fantastic, fun, juvenile, and totally impractical car. Ideal for sad middle aged men like myself. If I want a midlife crisis... I'll have one

Mick / Ltd,
If you are looking to get the best of best of the brand, rather than the 'entry' level offering, you really need to look at the Carrera GT. It has two seats, although they are quite deep and seperated, so you can't sit in both at the same time.
Only issue you wouldn't get out of first gear at the maximum speed permitted.
Or alternatively, what about a 911 GT3RS, with the integral roll cage and minimalist interior?
Seriously though, don't get a performance car if you are not going to use the performance. If is just for the posing value, get a Mercedes CLK instead.

LTD-
3 out of 4 of your points I agree with. Not convinced about the datsun thing though.
As for the headroom for mick issue, I seem to remember an advert, I think for the TR7,quoting 27000 miles of headroom. I should imagine the boxster would have about the same.Is that enough?

I suppose it would depend on how big your head is........
Seriously, the 350Z is a superb car. I would prefer one to a Boxster.
Driven one ?
