Honda Civic Type-R?

Posted by: Paul Hutchings on 20 May 2005

Car hunt goes on Smile

All cheap BMW coupes at dealers are sheds. AN Elise would be lovely but there's that "need something sensible" factor, plus running/storing three cars would be difficult.

So.. Second hand Honda Civic Type-R?

Seems they can be had from dealers for about £11-12k, and give hatchback practicality with mini-rocket performance. I'm also thinking Japanese so deathly reliable?

Other than the usual "try one and read the reviews" can anyone tell me anything about them?

cheers,
Paul

I'm afraid that for better or worse, I've always had a thing for porsche. I'm sure the 350 is a great car, maybe its badge snobbery, maybe residual value, maybe looks, but it doesn't float my boat.Getting back to the origin of the thread, if/when I can no longer afford or justify porsche type budget on a car, I could happily live with a golf gti or a couple of cars from the honda range. I guess there is other great hi-fi out there, but naim has always done it for me. Possibly, there is a parallel there.

The Boxter failed to impress.

It was fast and handled superbly.

It was also cramped, noisy and you could feel every little bit of the road.

I think I am more suited to a Jaguar, at least they are comfortable.

Mick,

I not surprised the Box(s)ter didn't suit.

Think on, Rovers are great bargains at the moment, and will certainly shield you from feeling what the tyres or engine are doing.

Paul, (back to the thread again)

I am not surprised the 1.4 VW Golf does not give driver involvement and satisfaction - our 1.6 Golf is workmanlike, reasonable handling but a bit wheezy and struggles on long motorway journeys at high speed.

I am sure the Honda Civic Type-R or Clio 182 or new Golf GTi would be a lot better, but a new one would bust the budget.

Type-R are starting to fall into the Max-Power laxxers crowd, so you would have to watch for ones that have been caned, and had plastic bits stuck on.

What about Focus RS ?

Mick,

Try an XK8 or XKR. I test drove an XKR a couple of weeks ago. Very refined, very quick, good steering and handling. (Bit juicy though). Sumptuous interior with excellent seats. It'll be right up your street.

Type-R looks like a fridge on wheels.

Cheers,

And how is the 350z going to suit then?

No, it is a Rover 75 plutobarge for Mick.

I think the suspension of the 350Z is more forgiving at 29mph, 39mph, 49mph, 59mph and at 69mph than the Boxster.

I agree about the Rover being a plutobarge (aka boring piece of sponge) but we do not need the future thread about the warranty situation when, not if, it breaks.

I rest my case about the Range Rover though - that is what he SHOULD buy.

I bought a new Civic Type-R last year to replace my Accord Type-R (which sadly isn't made anymore).

Great car and certainly goes round corners Smile

Get an RX8 or 350z.

Just got back from a test drive, albeit not a very involving one due to the city centre location of the dealers, and a feeling that they get all and sundry wondering in asking for a go so they probably assuming you're wasting their time.

Nice car. Quieter than I expected, better built than I expected, no rattles etc.. and blip the throttle and it goes.

The downsides seem to be that good used ones cost a lot and there doesn't seem to be a single car without badly kerbed wheels at any Honda dealer I looked at.

I'm not too sure I care about the image as I know I'm a decent and sensible driver, but I did have to chuckle as at the first set of lights I stopped at I heard a loud revving noise and looked in the mirror to see "spotty baseball cap kid" in his Corsa out to impress his mate.. suffice to say he failed Smile

All in all I'm fairly impressed, though if I think about it and see one I would want a full and proper test drive to see how it handles on long smooth A-Roads.

The problem I'm finding is there's little that I actually like enough to spend my hard-earned money on hence the very small list.

There's a new Civic coming out next year, which might be worth waiting for even if there isn't a Type R immediately or at all.

Re Type Rs in general: a worrying number of hits appears if you Google "Type R", "Civic" and "Chav". I wouldn't let this put me off, though, in the unlikely event that I could ever afford a Type R. And I have yet to see one driven by anyone looking remotely Chav-like.

Disclaimer: this post will piss a few of you off but I don't care.

Can't be arsed to read the whole thread. Would just like to say that every single CTR driver I've met on the roads in the past few months has been a bona fide wanker. The very, very worst kind of driver. Full-on aggression, dangerous overtaking, tail-gating, 50+ in a 30, etc., etc.

I was doing 40 in a 40 (nice boy me) and was overtaken by a CTR - in a town - doing at least 70. On the same stretch of road where someone was killed a week previously.

Buy a CTR and be a wanker. Or do something to redress the balance. I don't know if it's just that the car attracts prats or turns normal drivers into prats. Maybe someone can clarify this for me.

Anyway, you'll all probably hate me for this - but for once I really wanted to get this off my chest. It used to be Subaru drivers that annoyed me most - but in comparison to CTR drivers, they're saintly and just.

...and this is exactly why I couldn't wait to sell my Evo VIII.
I thought I was above worrying what others thought about which car I was in, but I was wrong.
In a performance Japanese car everyone hates you (apart from teenage boys). I was surprised by the venom, and really couldn't handle it.
I'm back in a boring Saab, and everyone loves me again.
Think carefully Mrs Mick.

As an alternative to a CTR, what about an Accord Type R? Older and therefore much cheaper secondhand, albeit a bit scarce at Honda main dealers. Should keep you away from the chav image as hardly anyone knows what it is. I had a severe hankering for one last year but ended up getting a company car instead - I still wonder if I did the right thing

Strangely enough on the way home from work today I noticed a Type-R behind me and couldn't work out what it was until a straight bit when I just about had chance to read the back of the car as it zoomed past me Smile

Nice car but 5 door and just not what I'm after size-wise.

Still very tempted by the Civic, though I believe there is a facelift/new model due later in the year, though if it goes the same way the Golf did from MkIV to MkV it's a step in the wrong direction IMHO.

A few thoughts.

Firstly the pics of the new generation civic look very, very nice. A real change for the better.

A Type-R tends not to be available at launch so it may be some time. Good time to snaffle an old one!

My wife is on her second Honda (currently a Jazz). Over the last 9 years of Honda ownership I cannot praise too highly the reliability and longevity of the marque. They just do what they should, and keep doing it year after year.

Finally, do not buy an Alfa 147. Just don't. I'll explain in detail if you want...

Bruce-wjo had someone rip a nice hole in his Audi A3 this afternoon with a combination of reversing stupidity and a towbar. Ouch.
