Honda Civic Type-R?

Posted by: Paul Hutchings on 20 May 2005

Car hunt goes on Smile

All cheap BMW coupes at dealers are sheds. AN Elise would be lovely but there's that "need something sensible" factor, plus running/storing three cars would be difficult.

So.. Second hand Honda Civic Type-R?

Seems they can be had from dealers for about £11-12k, and give hatchback practicality with mini-rocket performance. I'm also thinking Japanese so deathly reliable?

Other than the usual "try one and read the reviews" can anyone tell me anything about them?

cheers,
Paul

Yup. I owned a 145 and a 147, which just shows that I'm slow to catch on too.

While I can't comment on the Type R as we don't rate it in Canada. We get the SiR which is really an Si in the rest of the world. ( 160 bhp and 5 speed. )

I have had mine for a year and have 30 000 km on it so far. Never been back to the dealer except for yearly inspection. ( I do oil and most service myself )The only thing I don't like is the lack of 200hp and a 6 speed. ( CTR fixes that ) With the 5 speed at 100km I'm turning about 3100 rpm, and at 120 close to 4K The car is more "at home" on the secondary roades, the gearing is just too low for the highway for any long trips. Having said that my last "hiway" trip I did 650km using 52 litres of fuel. The trip mostly hiway with some city inbetween.

My CRX ( Heavily modified but looks stock ) gains more "challenges" in an afternoon than the Civic in a week. The latest Civic hatch ( EP3 )never took off over here, lack of the Type R option being the most noted reason. ( We have never gotten any Type R Civic )So...they are not that common. I have seen only about a half dozen in the last year, not including what I have seen in a large city ie Toronto.

All in all my 4th Honda and I'm still smiling ( and dreaming about an RSX Type S driveline to transplant into the civic giving me a faux Type R )

As for other peoples opinion, well as my wifes father says " that may mean something to others, but means fuck-all to me " Is it not more about what your senses tell you when driving than some posing wanker in the next lane?

Give it a good test-drive. Good luck

regards,

michael

I'm more concerned with opinions like "I brought one and it broke down fifteen times in the first six months" than "all CTR drivers are wankers" Smile

Can anyone with a UK CTR comment on the "cruisability" on major A-Roads and Motorways, i.e what's it doing at 80mph in sixth so far as noise/RPMs?

HI,
when my missus wanted to change her car, we tried a type R, and also an Audi TT and a mercedes C200 coupe. The merc won - it handles well, goes plenty quick enough, and has comfy seats etc. The Type R was quick etc - no doubt about that - but it was very hard in its ride and wanted to be thrashed round rather than take it steady...

I admit our budget was a little more than yours, but you can pick up a good deal with your budget if you shop around. Also, don't forget to ask about servicing - it cost these days to get any of the cars mentioned in this thread serviced!

Ha!

I was chatting with my friend last weekend, he works for Renault F1 and he was describing what they had done. I had not realised just what a dodge BAR tried to pull. Nice try lads.

What on earth is that meant to be?

don't tell me you don't know a quality turbo upgrade when you see one Smile

We had a Civic type R for a couple of years. It was totally reliable, quick, and not too bad for long distance work. It was replaced by a Golf 1.8T 5 door as we needed the extra doors for the sprog. It was worse in every way apart from ride and cruising refinement.
If you take one on a track day (or indulge in serious back road hooligan behaviour) you will be amazed at what it can keep up with (Mid 80's Porsche 911 turbo in my case).
However, to be honest I feel that this sort of car has had its day (along with the Scooby and Evo). Even on twisty B-class roads if you push it you will be going at crazy (and totally illegal) speeds and if you aren't going to push it then why buy a car like this?

To bring back to life an old thread...

I picked up my 02 CTR today after a test drive last week. I have had a truly shitty last 18 months but I had the biggest grin on my face when I got home. To reference another thread, if anyone is feeling depressed, get yourself one of these, you'll be sorted in no time Smile

Bearing in mind I was moving up from a 1.6 Polo, the CTR feels VERY quick. It shifts along quite nicely at low revs but dab the throttle with a little more agression and the thing flys. Get to 6k revs and...well, I hope you brought a change of underwear with you Smile

The handling is sublime, you can really feel what is going on with those massive front wheels, brakes are really good too but they need to be to stop the thing. The build is first class as well, everything click and clunks with an air of solidity. The only minor downside I could see some people having, is the ride. It is pretty hard but that is part of the experience.

I will report back (if anyone cares) when I have done some Mway driving to see how it deals with that.
