just upgraded my 102 to a 52 ,great improvement.my question is would an upgrade from a 180 to a 250 offer much, i live in a highrise and never really have a chance to crank the volume.i also listen to my 01 a lot, spent my money on the better tuner rather than the xps for my cdx;with kids and a lousy porfolio i'm trying to be judicious with my upgrades.i would welcome the opinions of his learned forum.thanks in advance.

Making the move from a 180 to a 250 is not really a matter of performance or finesse at volume....i.e. from your post I take it you feel that the 250 will give you more at higher volumes and hence it may not be warranted.
Well it's an honest mistake to make albeit incorrect.....going from the 180 to the 250 is similar to a veil being uplifted from your speakers.
The sound is more open, dynamic this improves the timing of the music....with the 180 you get a more darker more bass heavy sound whilst the 250 opens the sound restoring a natural balance which you can sit and if you want concentrate on particular aspects of the sound i.e. guitar or bass or vocals etc....with the 180 the bass seems to lead/be more prominent in the mix.
Hence why I think the 102/180 combo works so well...more so than 102/250.
You don't get less bass with the 250 just more controlled and faster musical bass.
You really have to demo them back to back the differences are unmistakable, but due to the human brains ability to recall differences in sound....if you listen to a 180 and the a week later a 250 the differences aren't exactly life altering.
Depends on how good your ears are...but with a pre-amp as revealing as a 52 the 250 will stand out like the proverbial dog's bollocks. wink

Firstly you don't say what speakers you are using?

but I would tend to agree that the 180 will be letting your 52 down. I use a 180 with my cdx/xps and 82. My impression is the 180 tends to run out of steam particularly using demanding speakers. This is more noticable at low levels and particularly in the bass department. The answer is simply to crank the volume up. This really beefs the bass up and deepens the sound. However living in a high rise it is not always possible to crank the volume up. The answer is go for more grunt with the power amp.

The 250 will certainly improve matters but before you upgrade to the 250 try the xps on the end of your cdx. I have just done this and it provides a real improvement, however I still feel the 180 is letting the system down.

By all means do the dem but I suspect you will find the improvement minor compared to the leap you have just had. For example - when I was running an 82/SC/250 I had a 52, a Fraim and a pair of 135's on home dem. The 52 gave the biggest improvement followed by the Fraim. I bought these and kept the 250.

The 180, while fast and dynamic, was also thin sounding without any harmonic depth at all.

I agree with you entirely, I will be replacing my 180 with a 300 as soon as I can.

The XPS will sort that out. The 82/180 will certainly produce more bass than the 42/110 and my memory of the cdx without the xps was that the bass was a little bit bloated. The xps brings the control and refinement.

No contest

The 180 is not in the same class as the 250.

The 250 is the minimum I would recommend to powering say SBL's and above.

As good as the 180 is, it is not the ideal companion for a 52, which the 250 is.
