That made me chuckle.

Very interesting - wonder how many kids would have seen a Reel-to-Reel.

By the time I was 18 I had seen so much vinyl I hated it and gave all my records away in favour of cassettes. [OK I was 20]

They may or may not have seen vinyl but most have no idea how good it can sound.
My LP playback is far from state of the art now but I played my sons some original Black Sabbath and they were both completely astonished at how good it sounded. However they're more concerned with how many albums they can carry about with them. Vinyl is an interesting historical curiosity for them, nothing more.

or "big black cds" as my 8 year old called them.

I can believe that they haven't heard it but never seen it? Unlikely. Unless the vast majority of 18 year olds aren't much into music - how likely is that?
I thought vinyl was on the up again, despite every effort by the music industry to kill it? Take a small cross section of any cohort you like and you can pretty much get the results you need. It doesn't prove anything.

My daughter called them that too, they have remained so ever since.
What does an mp3 look like?

My 10 year old loves music but every time I put on vinyl she won't listen. Even if I play her favorite music she won't listen when it is on vinyl. She says that vinyl is too old an outdated for her to listen to. Guess I am old and outdated too.

Vinyl is OK for old farts [like me] The youth live active lives and don't care for vinyl the way it needs to be. So, it gets scratched, warps, and then sticks and or jumps. Also young people [not children] have sex lives that don't accomodate getting up every 20 minutes to change the soundtrack. CDs [and later technology, beyond me] are better if you are young!

Of course Steve O!
Whilst on the subject it is funny how you often hear about female breast reductions, but you never hear anything about blokes having a penis reduction!
