al*** value vs system value
Posted by: RICHYH on 16 January 2003
Out of interest, working on an Lp or Cd being worth £10 each can people advise the relative value of each. (I remember in the 80s that it was considered that "real music people" had higher value Lps than the system, whereas nowadays the system value must have rocketed where as Albums are about the same). This is my excuse as my system is 2 to 1.

Rich
Based on the £10 yardstick, my LP and Cd collection is worth over 7 times what my audio system is. I think that's about right, personally.

I have about £1,000 worth of cd's, but no cd player.
What's the ratio of that?

What is more relevant is the relative size of regularly played CDs/LPs to the total collection size.
A collection of records relevant to earlier years and interests that are not played are just shelf ornaments and not an indication of interest in music versus box cost

About 680 CDs and 200 LPs (didn't have a turntable until I had a CD player so...).
My kit (no Naim barring NACA5 as yet
) is worth about 2k for CD/vinyl/amp/speakers/stand/cables, so that's about 4.5/1 so that's fair...
Counting in all my tapes, MDs and 8track cartridges I guess the ratio would stay the same but the embarrassment factor would be a lot higher
When the music's over turn out the lights

I'm the one person who has more rig than music.
I have about 320 CDs (okay a few years ago I had about 1200 stolen and have not replaced them all) so at £12 each is £4. The rig is about £11.
Still my 319 copies of Brothers in Arms sounds great on my 135/IBLs. I also have a single copy of Love over Gold.

O.K. according to some of the theories, if you have just one album, but really love it, and a Clearaudio Master Ref, the top Clearaudio m/c, the Sonic Frontiers 4 box phono stage, 552, 3 x 500, active DBLs, you are a better human being than someone with 10,000+ LPs, and a Goldring SP25 and a NAD amp and AR speakers?
How does this work then?
Surely everyone has a touch of the collector in them? I for one would sorely miss all the piles of records stacked up against the wall - they are like a piece of conceptual art, just sitting there, waiting for the day to be played again?

I agree, David
I have 3,000 LPs and would miss those lovely spines, also the ever-growing "to listen to" pile. I also hhave 1,000 CDs and would miss them too, although I don't listen to digital as much as analogue.
I was thinking about this question last night, and had a search around. I found I had over 250 bootleg LPs, CDs and tapes by New Order, over 200 by the Floyd, 75 by Kraftwerk, 35 by A Certain Ratio, 40-odd by Durutti Column, etc. Many of these boots are of abysmal quality, and the vast majority of them I have listened to only once. I also counted that I had 11 different versions of New Order's 1986 album Brotherhood (CDs, LPs, cassettes from different countries) and 14 of the Floyd's Wish You Were Here. I don't "need" more than one copy of anything. But as David says, the collector mentality takes hold. I estimate that no more than 500 or 600 of my LPs gets played regularly. Would I ever give up any of these things, these redundant objects, sell 'em in order to fund an upgrade to my system? Never in a billion years. The money for those 135s or a Lingo 2 or SBLs will have to come from somewhere else...

Having only now browsed the 'Just heard £30K+ of Naim Equipment' thread I can square the circle and declare my car: system: music balance at 1:1:4.
The whole lot equates to slightly less than a 552 though...

I guess about 1:1 but only on replacement costs (recent upgrade to sistem last year). My music wish list has expanded somewhat since joining the Forum and entering the Music Room.
All my LPs/CDs get played regularly. Some are just more regular than others.

Cars as well is it?
Where will this end?
Houses.. wives.. childrens school fees.. pets... holidays... DVDs ... Eating out .. other lifestle choices ?
I can confirm my ratio of music spending vs pet food is infinity.

At least the children cost for me is nil.

Fags
Musn't forget tobacco. Yearly cost of gaspers/biftas/smurkes/tabs whatever you call them (at rate of 20-30 Lucky Strikes a day) currently exceeds music purchase by about 1.5 to 1. I really should give up...

Kevin-w,
Take a look at your collection of "Wish You Were Here". If you have the "1/2 Speed Mastersound" with HAL 33453-1AL on side one and HBL 33453-2AEX on side two inscribed on the runout groove, you have the best pressing available.
Best of look.

I have just over 300 CDs, and my gear would cost about 8k new, so the ratio is about 1:3 music:gear.
However in a recent discussion with Peter Stockwell, who scoffed at my seemingly meagre music collection
, I had to point out that my collection at the end of 1998 was only about 20 discs, so my purchasing rate for CDs has been about 75 per year to date. That's approximately 1.5 CDs per week which I don't think is too bad.
Also, it is all very well owning many hundreds of CDs/records, but what is the proportion of your colletion that you actually play on a regular basis/at all?
And what percentage of the available musical info stored on each disc is your sistem capable or retrieving?
I'd rather have a collection of 300 discs with the ability to say retrieve 80% of the info, than have 1000 discs and only hear 30% of the music upon each disc.
A significant sistem upgrade will always have you scurrying to dig out parts of your collection that you may not have listened to for a while rather than have you heading for the nearest music store.
Buying more discs and/or upgrading the sistem can both lead to hearing more tunes.
Regards,
Steve.

A person comes to visit a friend and he notices that the friend has a very very expensive expensive system.
Wow! he says, can you put something to listen to on the wonderful and very expensive system you have here?
Sure! says the friend – he opens the doors of a bookstand in which is the place of the records, there is only one record there –
he pulls it out and asks – Which side of the record do you want to listen to ?

I do indeed have that version of WYWH, and you are quite right - it sounds superb. I dug it up last night after reading your post and really enjoyed listening to it. Thanks for reminding me of its existence!!!

System is Karik/hi/72/135/briks (all s/h) pic is main collection, kitchen/office/car collection is another 50% or so. I can't be arsed counting them.

It really is a classic, probably my favourite album. HAL 33453-1AL on side one and HBL 33453-2AEX was the pressing used as a promo. I have 6 Mastersound pressings of this lp and two of them are this number.
All you need to do now is get the MFSL vinyl of DSOTM which is the best pressing. (Unless you already do)
It only cost me $148 sealed, 6 months ago, but you should hear it. It was one of the few MFSL lp's that sound excellent.
