al*** value vs system value

Posted by: RICHYH on 16 January 2003

Out of interest, working on an Lp or Cd being worth £10 each can people advise the relative value of each. (I remember in the 80s that it was considered that "real music people" had higher value Lps than the system, whereas nowadays the system value must have rocketed where as Albums are about the same). This is my excuse as my system is 2 to 1.

I used to have the MFSL DSOTM but it was nicked about 7 years ago (along with a load of Japanese LPs - the thief obviously knew what he was doing). It was far better than the MFSL gold CD.

Have you ever heard the MFSL UHQR (ultra high quality recording) pressing? It's supposedly very good. A sealed copy went on eBay last year for $450. I'd be interested to hear what it's like. It's so long since I heard the standard MFSL DSOTM, but IMHO the best version I've heard was the "EMI 100" pressing released at the beginning of 1997 - an absolute joy to listen to. How do you rate that against the MFSL?

Kevin,

I have the EMI 100 edition. It's very good, but is a little harsh in the treble.I think the DMM mastering doesn't help. The MFSL really comes into it's own at higher volumes. The detail is there throughout the range, excellent bass and it is open with plenty of space. Most MFSL's lack a little life, but DSOTM has it all.

I've never heard the UHQR pressing and the sort of money they go for, I probably never will. I'd have thought they were superb.

P.S. The best pressing of Peter Gabriel - SO is the EMI 100. This blows away any other pressing available, by miles.

Count,

agree it's a bit better than my standard pressing, although it's not a huge step forwards.

What is so annoying is that it is so much noisier than my heavily-played std pressing.

I also bought the EMI 100 Machine Head, and that's just a dog. Noisy, as above, but the sound struggles to match my horrible nice-price pressing and was absolutely destroyed by an older gate-fold std pressing.

cheers, Martin

Pressings

Last night I was listening to the DCC pressing of the RCA Living Stereo LP "Elvis Is Back". Not a great LP but it does contain a couple of corkers including a superb version of "Fever" containing just the King, a double bass, some percussion and finger clicks. It's an absolutely magnifiecent sound - Elvis is in the room with you. This, and the other DCC 180g pressings I have sound wonderful, even on my fairly humble system.

Martin,

I'm suprised at your EMI 100 sounding noisy. I have 2 copies of it and they are both quiet. I'm also suprised you only find it slightly better than your standard pressing.

You have to be lucky with pressings. I have just bought three copies of Coldplay - Rush of Blood To The Head, same batch from HMV. One is absolutely quiet no matter what volume, the other two are both equally noisy. I have taken the two back and kept the quiet one. It seems if you want perfection, you have to be a pain in the neck.

Kevin,

The DCC pressings are similar to Classic Records in that they all sound excellent. If you like The Doors, DCC have done four of their albums. However, they cost a fortune sealed.

If you like Elvis, have you tried the box sets "That's The Way It Is" and "Live in Las Vegas". They are very good.

I took it back twice, and the third was just as bad.

Gave up.

Thanks for making me get it out & play it.

cheers, Martin

Aaaah - a man of taste - just trying to get more of the first 2 and some of the third (other than what's on Martin (FAC325) - have you seen 24 Hour Party People?

It's good to see it's not just me with twinned up rows of CDs on a shelf Jez - mine have to share their space with MDs, tapes, and some really cheesy 8tracks - although I do have The Wall and Dire Straits/ST/Communique on cart (along with some real dodge like Moog at the movies - the version of "Live and let die" rocks!!!

Collecting vinyl is great though - I get a buzz finding a particular CD I've been hunting for, but despite the drawbacks, there's just something about vinyl... However, I hate buying new vinyl - most of it is rank (OK so I don't have the best deck but). I had to swap 2 copies of Madge's "Music" and gave up and got the CD instead, and other than 12 inches (and some trance vinyl which you'd be hard put to tell if it was duff anyway!) all the chart/rock stuff seems poor full stop. Give me a crackly old £1 copy any day - the old vinyl has soul and history to it (and usually no nasty barcode to mess up the artwork Smile)

A Certain Ratio

A classic band - expecially the first 4 - 5 LPs, from the cassette in a purse to I'd like to see you again. Loads of great 12"s, Flight, Waterline, Knife slits water etc.

Keep searching for the early vinyl, it is worth it.

They have / just about to release a new 12" , with remixes by and of Fila Brazilia, which I trying to secure.

Album / system ratio up again - another box of records arrived today.

Indeed. ACR were one of the very best acts in Britain from the period 1979 to 1986 (I thought tthey wwent off the boil quite a lot after they left Factory).

The best album is Sextet (Jan 82) but IMHO the best thing they ever did/have ever done was the Peel session of 1st July 1981 - three tracks, Skipscada, Day One and knife Slits Water. The version of KSL is the DEFINITIVE version.

They were ace live too - I think I saw them about 50 times(!)

Hmm - might have to look out for some ACR stuff next time I'm doing the hunt for vinyl then - probably not for 3 weeks now as my system is being boxed up and moved over the next 2 weeks and then all my dosh is going to have to go on junk like a new bed, some kind of (Ikea??) record storage and other associated moving stuff Frown

This new track - what's it called?
