Attention Stageline owners

Posted by: J.N. on 13 February 2002

Finally got around to having the phono sockets replaced with BNC's (as that's what I have on the end of the Ittok arm lead); and whey.....hey.

Remarkable improvement in sound quality. All the usual things. As those nice people at Linn used to say: 'Simply better'.

Get onto it. Cheap upgrade.

Funny ain't it. Here I am with a CDS2 and my modest Linn (Armageddon - Ittok - DV 10x 4) still has that magical something that I can't get out of the CD player.

Mind you, the reverse is also true. I don't get into those 'CD or vinyl' discussions. It's just great to be able to enjoy both.

wonder if my local naim shop can do the biz, I'm off there Friday to take a peek at the new P9...

Yeah, it's silly to get into the LP vs CD debate; both can be enjoyable, both can be excruciating no matter what the equipment.

But...but...but...isn't it significant that it takes a CDS-level CDP to provide modest LP12 level enjoyment????

Funny-farm (where do these names come from?),

i already have bnc's on a 32.5 but use adapters to convert to phono plugs. i was told it's not worth cutting the arm wire and putting bnc plugs on it unless the arm is rewired and is using a top notch cartridge.

If your dealer told you this he/she is misinformed. True, the better your kit the more difference it makes, but I would go to the trouble of putting BNCs on a phono cable even if I was running a Rega P2, RB250 and a rusty nail.

By the way, RCA-BNC converters are crap -- you lose the advantage of BNCs (impedence matching) plus you get the disadvantage of a shitty connection. At the very least you should put RCAs on your 32.5.

My Supercap-powered Prefix is connected to input 2 of my NAC52, which also has BNC inputs. Should I use them instead of input 2?

Jun,

it's the connection between the cartridge and phono stage (Prefix) which is important. DINs all the way after that...

Thanks, Martin!

...And the 4-5pin-wire from the Prefix-powering Supercap to the 52 is grey or black?

Jun,

it's an interconnect, rather than a SNAIC, so it should be grey (the new 'lilac' one, preferrably).

cheers, Martin

OK, then I have the right one! I thought it was a Snaic, because it's connected to a jack where usually Snaics are plugged...

The only lead to be upgraded in my setup is the grey burndy between CDPS and CDS1...
