CD 3.5 DOA

Posted by: Mike in CO on 07 March 2001

Greetings all -

I recently purchased a pre-owned CD 3.5 from a seller on ebay. The unit was packaged in the original carton with all packing materials, and he was the first owner. The platter was locked in place with the screw. The original sealed carton was then packed inside another carton with additional packing (foam peanuts).

It all seemed to arrive safely. I unpacked the player, removed the screw, popped a disc inside and...nothing came out. The track display works, buttons all work, and the unit appears to be playing the disc, but nothing appears at the output. (I tried several cables, and even put a volt meter across the output, and get nothing.) I don't have a separate PSU, so I have the jumper plug in the DIN4 jack as required. In some cases, I get a high-pitched whine, reasonably loud, coming from the player. (A disc isn't necessarily playing when this happens, and it's not predictable. Most of the time it's dead silent.)

My dealer says "Send it back!!!!", which the seller is willing to do without any penalty to me. Before I bail, I thought I'd check if anyone here knows a likely cause, or has had similar problems with their player. Otherwise, it looks like this unit will be going back to the factory at some point for a checkup.

Thanks for your help.

Mike

Looks like it's coming back to us in Chicago--either you (or the owner/shipper) should phone us in Chicago in the morning for a Return Authorization Number.

Manuel,
You could be right here. You take the four-pin plug out of the back to open access to a Flatcap or a Hi-cap socket. The four pins connect the internal power supply of the CD3.5 to the analogue output stage. The shield to the side of this "bouchon" prevents both the internal and an external power supply being used "a la fois!"
BTW, I have the very same piece of plastic with 4 pins(now redundant) infront of me. Anyone want it. It is so light it would cost next to nothing to mail it!
PS: Mike in CO appears to have the said plug already, having read his posting again, so it looks like there is a fault!
PPS: I had the same problem with Rotel RCD 991, before I upgraded to a CD5. The DAC went down two days after I bought it. At the time Rotel just sent me a new machine in exchange for the faulty one.
