Plasma air freight OK ?

Posted by: SC on 19 January 2009

I was about to have a Kuro plasma screen air freighted out to me from the UK, but I've just had someone warn of potential issues with Plasmas being affected by the incurred air pressure....?

Anyone have any knowledge of this ? What do you think ?

Thanks, Steve

The air pressure inside a plane is usually about the equivalent of 14000 feet above sea level. this shouldnt be a problem, i would have thought?

Hmmm, I tend to agree....I hadn't given it any thought as I just didn't consider it an issue...I'll try and get an answer from Pioneer UK...

More like 8,000 ft. But i have no idea how 8,000ft would affect a plasma - anybody on here from Lima, ar even Aspen who has a plasma? there are plenty in Calgary at 4,000ft

Pressure at sea level is about 1000 mb and at 8,000ft its about 750mb. Strikes me the bigger risk would be down to "baggage-handling"

But why buy the plasma in the UK?

I would worry about warranty.

Is it not available locally?

Available, but over twice the cost - was looking at over £4k for a 50", which was slightly ridiculous....Plus, the ltd edition white version of the Kuro was only released in Europe...Singapore was my best bet, which of course I checked out, but no....

Don - thanks for your more constructive input. I'm surprised that the hold of a plane is actually such a relatively low pressure, amazing. I'm not worried about the handling, it will all be crated up etc, it's more the Thais at the receiving end I'm concerned about ! Big Grin

I have seen a picture of a plasma screen that been placed horizontally and the glass had broken. So you have to ensure that the screen is kept vertical.

the passenger cabin is pressurized this way as well...that explains the sore ears when you descend and the pressure adjusts....

Thanks Derek. Fragile little things hey ! It's all in it's original packaging, then into a crate, so should all be ok, unless they stack a fridge or a car on top of it or something... Roll Eyes
