Heads up - Jose Gonza*** is back in town (yipee)
Posted by: JWM on 20 January 2008
Got our two tickets booked for UEA Norwich on 9th April.
He was superb at Cambridge Junction last autumn.
Thought others out there might be glad to have a prompt that Jose's back in town.

The second album is great music, but I think deliberately (and unecessarily) lo-fi production - some would call it edgy, I suppose.
Live we found that the songs from the second album blend seamlessly with the more established material.

Does that explain all the top-end distortion? I played it last night and thought my cartridge had somehow got trashed. The music is good though.

Daniel, I had exactly the same reaction!! I have bother LP (for me) and CD (for Mrs JWM). When I put on the LP I thought my cartridge was damaged
so then I put on the CD and because that was distorted too I thought my tweeters were damaged
!!
To be honest, with the quality of the music, I think that either poor engineering or a rather self-indulgent lo-fi feel is a bit unecessary. And it doesn't sound that live!
But the music's great so I'll forgive him.

I'll be there to - really like the UEA as a live venue.

Me to, although I think Norwich is crying out for a better music venue but I kind of like the UEA, quite personal and better now non smoking.

You´re right about that it was deliberate.
He was interviewed on Swedish radio just about two weeks ago. Looks like he wanted the production to sound just this way.
Still, the music is very good indeed.
Liked the veneer album a lot when it was released in sweden 2003. Never thought though that it would reach an audience of this magnitude outside Sweden.
Heartbeats I´m sure you know is a cover from The Knife´s Deep cuts. His version is very different from the original but if you have not heard them, they should not be missed.

Very interesting comments, Gunnar. Personally I can't understand why any musician would want to add that kind of distortion to such beautiful music. It doesn't sound like a deliberate distortion effect, just like a stylus wearing a hole in the groove!
Haven't heard The Knife's Deep Cuts. I'll keep an eye out for it.

EDIT And here it is! The Knife, Heartbeats

It puzzles me too.
I don´t remeber his excact words, but it seems that he had listen to quite a few 60´s recordings and found amongst others a Carole King recording (wich I can´t remeber the title of)and he wanted that athmospere.
Still that doesn´t explain why he would want this kind of distorted production.
I also very much doubt that he has not listened to the final mix and approved of it.
