Non-Naim cable and bi-wired speakers

Posted by: Willito on 26 February 2003

Hi all,

I will be home dem'ing Living Voice Avatar OBX-Rs (the one's with the external crossovers) this weekend. I realise that the forum has seen some very polar views on these speakers.

Views on the speakers, however, are not what I am after today. Instead, I am curious about using non-Naim cable in a Naim system.

I ask because the Living Voice agent suggests bi-wiring the speakers with a DNM cable. The received wisdom on the Forum seems to be that it is a complete no-no. Why is that? Could the negative experiences some people have had with the OBX-Rs be cable related?

Secondly, I would appreciate any views people might have on bi-wiring. Does Naim recommend it in their systems? I assume that this would require different wire, and could not be achieved with the existing NACA 5 that I have.

As always, thank you for your help and time!

Regards,
Will

My Near 50s sound better biwired via several amps (Electrocompaniet, Dynaco, Coda, Musical Fidelity) with NACA4, NACA5, and mid-level Kimber. They sound better single-wired (A5) through a 250.

Regards.

I think it was better when we burned heretics

I suspect they burned a few at NAIM before they allowed the 5 series out the door.

I am running Totem MANI 2's using totem's own speaker cable, only 2 meters long per speaker and bi-wired off a 112/150.
Sorry reach for another stake but it sounds great to me and the electronics is not at all unhappy

Bring back the good old days...

...wasn't there an experimental technique of dipping suspected witches/heretics deep underwater for a few minutes, and if they drowned they were deemed 'of-the-faith' - but if they didn't drown, they were obviously heretics and you burned 'em to save their souls...!

I've been biwiring for years with NAC5 from a 250. The stuff is difficult to work with but my dealer makes the amp-end contacts work fine with Naim bananas. Don't try it with an older, smaller amp like a Nait, though - I'm told that the heavier and stiffer double runs can snap off the receptacles inside the amp.

bi-wiring basically kills the groove. If it seems better you might be missing out on some of the more important aspects of the music, and focussing on that stuff that identifies you as "round".

Use the search bicycle. You'll find some useful info as to why you should not subject your Naim amp to bi-wiring.

Now, where's that box of matches? Any other bi-wirer's here care to jump atop the pyre?
