Genesis 1970-75 Vinyl Box Set

Posted by: Richard S on 07 January 2009

This set is the first of the collections to get a vinyl release and after some delays its now available.

£89.99 at What Records* for a 6LP set covering the Peter Gabriel era from Trespass to the Lamb.

Looking forward to getting my hands on this as I missed the Classic Records re-issues which tend to go for silly money on ebay.

(*other music retailers are available)

The downside to this boxset is that these albums have been remixed. All three boxsets released on CD have been remixed.

It remains to be seen whether these vinyl remasters sound better or not but even if they do, I cannot get my head round the remixes. They sound different in small little ways. I did not need different (they are not better) - I would just like the best sounding originals possible.

I luckily have all the Genesis albums on vinyl and the Definitive Edition CD Remasters from 94 as well. I have also bought all the newly released/remixed box sets on CD. I find them difficult to listen to and stick with my originals.

I think there are only 5 LPs but I've ordered mine - got to be worth a punt, but I note the comments about remixing. Like you, I missed the last vinyl issues

Trespass + Nursery Crime + Foxtrot + Selling England By The Pound + The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway = 6LP.........but only because the Lamb is a double album.

I accept the point about the remastering and to an extent I'm taking a punt. But if you think about it those first three weren't exactly shining examples of mastering in the first place. Can you hear the drums for instance?

As always the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.

Agree Richard and will probably get it myself. I listened to Foxtrot tonight from the 70-75 and it wasn't too bad. I would prefer though that they had not remixed. I'll look forward to hearing your thoughts.

I wish they'd mix out the drums - Genesis with minimal drumming as on their early albums sounds enchanting - the first incarnation of Genesis did not have any drummer at all.

Doesn't 70-75 imply some of their best early tracks are not on the elpee set such as The Serpent? I don't suppose it has their first single Silent Way, but that's no loss as it is dreadful - PG said they tried to make it sound just like the Bee Gees because they were Jonathan King's favourite group and they wanted to impress him. Of course, JK produced the first album and ruined some tracks by adding redundant pointless strings (surely these could be removed for a re-issue): the demos that they did away from King are vastly superior - though not exactly audiophile.

Doh! I'll get me coat.

My bought my original vinyl version of Selling England and Trick of the Tail when I was living in Belgium. I guess they were 'foreign' versions, as SEBTP was in a gatefold sleeve, and you could hear the tape hiss starting just before each track.
And the TOTT sleeve was made in a kind of wallpaper textured card, with 'Frick of the Fail' on the spine and a French lyric sheet. I guess something was lost in translation.
They would probably be worth something now - if I still had them, but that's another story
Cheers
John
