Ekos or Aro

That's the only two I'd consider......

It's said not to be a happy match but I'm not sure why. Other options other than Aro and Linn might be Morch who has a good reputaion, probably difficult to find used ones though. Some people get great results with Rega RB300 too.

I was told by a dealer that the newer SME arms were just too heavy for the LP12 suspension but I don't know if this is true or not. I've certainly never seen an LP12 with modern SMEs fitted.

The weight is not a problem.Arms such as the Mission Mechanic,Zeta,Kuzma Stogi are all heavier than an Ittok/Ekos(The Stogi is over 800g)....and work fine.

As i understand the weight will not be a problem but what about the sound.
of course i would go for aro or ekos (having no arm) but i own this sme 4.

As SME get used on other decks similar to the LP12 I see no reason why it shouldn't be ok on the Linn. I suppose the reason you don't see many/any? Lp12/sme is that Linn build their own arms and then there's the Aro. I wrote before that the match is said not to be a happy one, maybe this is in comparison to Ekos/Aro. It is a fine tonearm. Maybe someone on the forum knows more.

Been there, it's not just the weight, the whole thing (lp12 + sme arm) sounds ponderous in the extreme.
Perhaps it would be better to sell the SME and buy and fit an EKOS arm. They were literaly made for each other.

Further thoughts...

When you consider how sensitive the whole turntable is, even the choice of power supply for the motor changes the sound, then there is the support...etc.
So bunging an SME arm on just because you happen to have one is leaving a lot to chance.

Ekos or ARO?
The choice is yours.

I've had an ARO for six years now and have yet to experience a single problem with it.

If you fit an SME 4 OR 5 to an LP12 which has corner bracing you will need to remove some of this to allow the right angled arm cable termination point to pass, other wise it will touch and "short" against the plinth.

A section of the brace can be removed with a coping saw.

I heard a rumour that the corner braces were fitted to stop people putting SME arms onto LP12's in the first place.

Hi o.j.

I think it is SCHWERMUTIG, but then I have been out here so long, I'm forgetting the English!

The Beer is good though.

Cheers Robert

Actually, ponderous is best translated as schwerfällig. Schwermütig means sad, depressed.
