No, IE8 is really good.
Have you tried doing the update with IE closed?

Are you sure that you did not run IE 64 bit? This one never works with flash?

Had the same problem. There is a conflict with some builds of IE8 and Flash. There is some infor about it on the Adobe website.
It was on a work machine so IT did a complete re-build / re-install and just left IE at version 7, and the problem went away.
You may be stuck with it. Sorry

I like IE8 a lot, but if you use Spybot S&D's list of prohibited sites, it slows to a crawl at times.

As a Mac user, I envy you because I think IE8 is a couple of million times better than Safari, Firefox, and Chrome. Whatever Apple try, I am sorry to say that they are still very very very far behind IE8. Chrome / Firefox are hopeless.

In what respect?

Well, I am glad that you ask. Listed below are some of the most annoying issues for me:
- Safari is very memory voracious - After a couple of tabs, the memory usage can go up to 600 MB!
- Safari / Firefox ? Chrome (beta) for Mac do not work with some web sites (especially banking sites). One can blame the web authors, but for now, I have to go to a PC or using IE on VM in order to access these sites (sigh!). What can I do? There are no alternatives.
- Some multi-media stuffs, especially the wmv videos do not work with Firefox / Chrome, even I have flip4mac plugin installed.
- Chrome (beta) for Mac causes very high CPU usage whenever I go to a certain web sites where there is a lot of flash ads, for example CNN news. Sometimes I quit Chrome but some Chrome helpers still running in the background causing my Mac to become so hot.
- Have you ever need to access your PC at work using secure desktop remote? Well, the only way is to do it is to use IE, one can use Safari or Firefox but these browsers use Java which runs very slowly and consumes even more memory whereas IE uses ActiveX which is very snappy and has a very small memory footprint.
- And the list goes on and on.
Having said all that, my preferred OS is still Mac OS. Windows OS, regardless whether it is xp, vista or windows 7, is so flaky, and most importantly for me is the resource-intensive antivirus stuff that you must pay and run on the machine. There are free antivirus stuffs but they are pretty bad and more harmful to your machine than the viruses themselves.

Thanks for that Peter, I can't say I've had any of those issues. I use Firefox on my mac and PC. I tried Chrome on my PC didn't like it.
I don't particularly like Safari either, I will try it if I have (rarely) problems with any specific sites.
Don't iMacs run hot anyway, a side effect of congested packaging? Mind you I thoght that was the screen as my other flatscreen runs pretty hot.
Is there an app that will show your how mac is working?

Everything else works so well so I can't complain. I do a lot of software design works and one of the programs that I cannot live without is the OmniGraffle Professional, it allows me to sketch diagrams, etc. so easily. Keynote is also very nice, I use it a lot for presentation.
For monitoring your Mac, I would recommend iStat Menus (if I think this is what you ask?).
