UV Filter for Canon DSLR
Posted by: fatcat on 21 May 2009
Does anybody have any experience as the effectiveness of fitting a UV filter to a Canon DSLR.
My understanding is that some DSLR’s have built in UV filtration at the sensor or in the lens. How effective is it on a 40D/EFS 17-85mm.
Thanks

I always just use a Canon protection filter. Just a clear piece of glass. Why do you think that you need to filter UV? Are you getting problems with photos?

I use the Hoya Pro filters on my lenses, I used to use the basic UV when I had film & digital, now with just digital I got the Protector.
Just put something decent on to protect the lens, unless you are ultra careful.

I shoot with Nikon's, Mamiya's, Hasselblad's and Leica's.
I use UV filters on all of my medium format, 35mm film and digital lenses.
The only reason I don't have them on my large format lenses is because by the nature of the beast, the lenses are handled much more carefully than smaller formats.
I try to use the lens maker's filters as they supposedly use the same glass 'formula' as that used in the lenses themselves. If not, I use B+W filters.
The filters are mostly there for protection of the front element. Basically any mishap will result in the replacement of a $50 filter and not a hundreds of dollar repair to the lens or even a lens right-off.

Thanks for the advice everbody. Sounds like I need a filter for protection, if nothing else.
