Help: very hot Nait3

Posted by: jpk73 on 06 February 2003

The Nait3 is connected to Credos with Naca5, but the Naca5 is not terminated with the original Naim plugs. There are just banana plugs, so one of those touched the case of the Nait3 and I guess there was a short circuit.

The case got very hot, and as you can see on the enclosed pictures it was also very hot inside... Do I have to worry? It still plays music as usual. I wonder why the fuse didn't blow. I have it disconnected for now and plan to get origional Naim plugs to the Naca5.

The white cover of the transformer has a funny color, also the circuit board seems to be roasted...

One capacitor looks a little bit strange... Also outside the plastic cover is deformed. You have to login to see my pictures.

Jun,
if I were you, I would not turning it on again.
From the pictures, seems like your Nait will have to go to a trip to Salisbury......
The cap and rosted PCB board sure looks bad to me.

You've cooked it to about, hmmm, medium.
In serious need of attention.
Further damage could result to your unit or
perhaps connected pieces. Send it off, don't
wait.

Jun!
As Jean-Marc and Bob says.
This nait 3 is in very ill.
Send it to naim for service.
Don“t wait.

I had a nait3 that ran hot but perhaps not to that extent. Naim service had to exchange the entire power amp section.

Jun,

So you've upgraded your active 6 pack, 52 to a Nait? Wink Must be a hell of an integrated amp!

Jun,
You said "it still plays music as usual", does it come hot now if it plays.
Don't worry too much, your Nait have had a serious heat, but it has resisted with bravery.
The 2 big output resistors (.22ohms) are not burnt, this is a good sign.
Send it to Naim for a check-up, if you can live with a brown board, it won't cost a fortune.
As MC2 said, the damages seems to be mainly cosmetic, but play safe, faillures can occur later.

Do you know which terminal has touched the case?
I suspect it is the - one, as both sides seems to be equally burnt.
Have you opened the case before the problem, most Nait3 boards become "naturally" brown.
Ask Naim for an explanation of the fault. You can have a ground problem in your setup/mains.

Jens: it's not really an upgrade... nait3+Credos are installed at a friends home.

Today I went to the dealer and he said there is no way that it could be a shorted cable. Should I trust him...?

He had CDS2/202/?PSU/200?/SL2 on demo, it sounded very good indeed! Not as good as my 6pack/NBLs though...

Jun,

crikey! By the looks of it that Nait 3 has been baking away for quite some time. I'm amazed that your friend has only now raised concerns about this. I doubt if it has been caused by the banana plugs "shorting" on the chassis - such a scenario would more likely result in poor or no sound.

This is the sort of situation which can come about if a Nait 3 is used with non-standard speaker cable but, as you say your friend has been using NACA5 then the next most likely cause is a rogue component on the amp board causing the inside to overheat. If this is the case we will supply a new board and transformer for your friend at no additional cost.

Your best course of action is to contact your local Naim agent so they can look at it. If it as I suspect then we will then send them the replacemnt parts required.

Thank you very much. I will check the serial-number and let you know!

Agree with Richard and your dealer, the shorting has not cause the burnt on the board. All components look ok.
