Heat Busters
Posted by: Steve Catterall on 01 August 2001
With the current 'heatwave' (i.e. more than one day of sunshine) I've noticed that my amps and power suppies are getting quite warm.
Particularly the XPS, which gets very warm indeed. Aiming a fan at them soon cooled then down, but a few questions came to mind.
Is there a reason why the XPS gets hotter than the rest?
Is there any danger of damage if they get too hot?
Does the temperature in any way affect performance?

if its any comfort, my xps runs warmer than the rest of the power stuff as well. i was quite a bit concerned about this but was told by paul darwin that this is OK.

HI Steve, as far as performance goes, either I'm going deaf or the heat seems to effect the absolute volume.
Normally I'm at 9-10 o'clock. This week it's been up to 12. Possibly heat / energy related, I'm no physicist(sp):).

Cletus,
You're right about the physics.
Heat makes the air molecules space themselves wider apart from their neighbouring molecules. The extreme situation is a vacuum - which is why "nobody can hear you scream in outerspace!".
The wider apart the molecules, the less efficient is the transfer of vibrating energy from one point to another.

If space is a vacuum - who changes the bags ?

but seriously, surely gear which runs hot must have a shorter life; degenerating electrolytic caps. for example.
Does Naim gear working in hotter climates have a shorter life? Do audits of service data support this?
If so, is there a critical temperature above which ageing is accelerated?

Heatwave?
My 135's were making such a marvelous noise last night I thought I'd died and gone to HIFI nervosa heaven....
You ain't hearing it till you're hearing it

Thanks for all the replies. I tried seeing if I could hear a difference between the units running hot (left all day to simmer), or running cold (after an hour with a fan) ... and I couldn't hear any.
