Who's Next LP or CD?
Posted by: Brucie on 10 January 2007
I've tried doing a serach on this album but none can asnwer my question. I do not own a copy of this and was wondering, do I get the remastered CD (6 quid from CD101) or go for a 3LP set (22 quid) - but not sure if its the remastered version. If the LP set is awesome then I'm happy to pay the extra.
Advice welcome.

Hi
I have a 2cd deluxe edition set, I can't really say if the remastering is a big improvement or not, however in addition to the album you get a live set from the renowned lifehouse gigs and a unreleased version of Who's next which is quite different from the released version. It is all quite interesting and worth the extra money. I don't know however if this is the same as your 3 lp set! I hope this helps!!

The 3lp pressing is very good, being taken from the original master tapes. The only problem is the pressings are a bit noisey.
The other one to consider is the Classic Records pressing. This is just as good, but different mastering, again from the original tapes. This vinyl is dead quiet. If you go for this one, make sure the spine number is 2408 102, as the first batch was mispressed.

The 2cd remaster is very good, as davereay says. One of the greatest albums of its era.

There is subtle differences between the single disc remaster and the double deluxe. If you want to know what the differences are then have a look at Amazon US reviews as I can't be bothered to go through all the differences. Mt personal preference is for the single but there will be those that say otherwise.

I've got the lp set....its stunning on quality. You get some extra live tracks and studio stuff, but essentially the lp in stunning sound quality.

When i bought it it wasn't that expensive from diverse vinyl

I remember having Who's Next as a teen in 70, it was great, really hit those teenage hormones. I think buying it now would make my neighbor a bit angry as I couldn't keep the volumn down on Baba O'Reilly and a few other tracks. lol, guess I've not aged much in 30 years.
Last night I went thru Revolver, first half of White album and then Abbey Road. woah was that great, but at 10PM i had to turn it off and go to bed to be polite to my neighbor, but with a smile on my face.

I have to say I thought the double disc remaster was a significant improvement on the single disc version! However if memory serves they have different bonus stuff on so they're both worth having.

Great album. My 5 year old is learning air guitar to it. Anyway, I have the three lp set, the CD Deluxe edition remaster, and an american original pressing vinyl that I got for a dollar (to replace the old one I wore out.)
Call me crazy but the dollar platter spins the sweetest!

I've got the 2CD deluxe, with sleeve notes and it's awesome by being clean and highly dynamic.
It's also an amp 'shutter-downer' as my 250 got very warm with it in to Dynaudios.
Go for CD -- you will wear vinyl out!

I always thought that the only reason an amp shut down was due to instability. I would be checking mine if I were you as in 30 years of having NAIM I have never had one do it to me. I like my music very loud at times. But there will be someone who has more knowledge in the forum than I do over this.

Topic discussed to exhaustion on Steve Hoffman's forum. The original LP on Track sounds good; best easily available CD seems to be the Canadian MCA (budget version with no bonus tracks).

I have an original LP and the recent 'standard' Classic Records release. I have often found the sound on Who records to be a bit muddy (production/engineering/mastering?) and it is to a degree on the original, however stick the Classic records copy on and from the opening bars of Baba O'Riley it's clear that this is an altogether different beast and far clearer. Recommended.

Thanks for all the postings. I actually picked up a second hand copy for 2 quid yesterday...not bad.

Neither.
The best sounding versions are the Canadian MCA CD mastered by Steve Hoffman - easily available from HMV.ca, and alas the only vinyl version worth having is the UK original.
Both can be had for pennies.
I've compared all the newer versions and they sound terrible compared to the two above.

KT66, you don't know what you're talking about. The Canadian MCA CD mastered by Steve Hoffman is a load of junk.

Strong statement. Can you expand on your reasons as to why. I haven't heard the Hoffman version but from what I have read he appeared to do a straight remaster of the original tapes with no eq.

ewemon,
I read the Hoffman site, fell for the Hoffman hype and bought the Canadian cd. It sounds awful. The new Classic Records pressing is as good as it gets.
The original master tape story is a long one and ends with the fact that the tape doesn't exist any more. Hoffman knows all about the tape history if you care to do a search on the Hoffman site.
The cd still sounds junk. This is a direct comparison on a cds3 v LP12/Aro/XX-2.

Thanks as I was thinking of purchasing it.

Sure you got the right CD? It sounds great on my system.
I've not compared it directly to vinyl (I don't have the first press Track but I do have a decent one). However I like it much better than the remix CD.
Perhaps our tastes just differ.
