New Pope. No reform here then.....

It looks as if any possibility of the RC Church being updated to relate to the world has just gone up the chimney.
I would suggest that will increase the gulf between the world's religions and increase the likelihood of further world conflict. It worsens the Aids situation where JPII failed, he is outspoken in his anti-"women in the Church" view. No cleaning up of the skeletons. This is total disaster.

Yes, the Holy Spirit seemed to have let the cardinals down badly here.
Ratzinger seems to embody all the negative aspects of JP without any of the positive human traits. A horrid uncompromising conservative who seems unlikely to address any of the manifold problems in today's Catholic Church. The only silver lining is that he's about a thousand years old, so hopefully he's just a stopgap and the Catholic Church will be here again in a few years time welcoming in someone genuinely progressive.

I've done some reading on the new chap and it's not looking good. Ultra right wing, ex-nazi youth etc, etc - he makes Mike Parry look like a liberal!

Chaps
Ratzinger will live for say 7 or 8 years and his successor will probably be more liberal and everyone will then be happy.
7or8 years is a relatively small amount of time in the greater scheme, so it is no big deal.
The new Liberal Pope will probably allow condoms and then at least no one can blame the Church when all and sundry still continue to infect themselves with AIDS.
The only way to stop AIDs is to dose the water supply with bromide.

I now wish to withdraw my comment about the new pope being more right wing than Mr. Parry.

A German Pope.
There's one for the guest list at your stag weekend...
Still, at least he'll get the trains to run on time.

Why do you do it Mick?, it's a simple enough question. Perhaps you have some masochistic tendencies to have abuse hurled at you.

"The only way to stop AIDs is to dose the water supply with bromide."
You have to admit it would work better than dishing out condoms that none of them will use.

How can you all expect reforms from an organisation that never changed it's internal laws for 2000 years and did try to spread those laws in the world killing people?

Yes Michael, Good Cocktail party chat with Mr Gates & his chums, I expect those British & American prisoners raped and infected in UK & US Jails thought the same when they tried to sue their respective Governments after release, or was it the later infection of their wives and partners that really could blow the lights out in tinsel toon ?

I clearly can say to you:
Though Luther was german too,
we surely will find no hope
in this mumified german pope.

Ratzinger doesn't look all that well to me. I think that 7 or 8 years is overstated. The cardinals have appointed the oldest Pope (at time of appointment) for over 100 years. If he lives as long as 7 or 8 years they'll be furious.
A reforming Pope now would be seen as a slap in the face for John Paul 2, his memory and his supporters. After 3 or 4 years of Benedictine 16 there'll be no problem.
The Catholic Church doesn't play the short game.

They have also appointed somebody of high profile: Ratzinger is a reputed theological scholar and has never hesitated to speak out. If their objective were an appointment without consequences they would not have picked Ratzinger.quote:The cardinals have appointed the oldest Pope (at time of appointment) for over 100 years. Ironically the only establishments that seem to have any hope of surviving for 2000 years are the ones that don't change to reflect to mood of the day, year, century...

I can understand an honest exchange of views on this topic, but I don't get why the moderator(s) permit such obvious trolling as above --- how does this help promote NAIM products?

OK Mate, slightly ironic considering he was number one on the 'Outrage' list when it came to the non respect chanting at Celtic ?

Do you think 7-8 years is enough time for the Vatican to save up the money to buy new ballot papers?

I would suggest your last posting is the best example of trolling here.
What I said is perfectly true.
The new Pope will continue the JP2 line but he is unlikely to go beyond a decade.
The chances are by then, the Cardinals will elect a more "Liberal" Pope.
The reality of life is that the Popes preachings on condoms, have hardly any effect on Aids at all. If someone wants sex, they will use or not use condoms as they see fit and the Pope is unlikely to have any influence on that at all.

I think the problem with Mick's posts is that whenever the discussion is about the Pope tha only intellectual leap Mick is capable of making is:- Pope--> Catholicism --> Condoms --> Sex
