Dave Matthews Band - any interest?
Posted by: JeremyB on 14 May 2002
Just got back from the Dave Matthews concert at the Coors Ampitheatre in San Diego. Not a great start to the evening missing nearly an hour with the traffic and all but a bit of a disappointment. All the songs sounded the same to me - even "All along the Watchtower". Got back and was anxious to find out what Naimites thought but couldn't find much on a search.
LOTS of college people. My friend (keen DM fan) commented that they were obviously more concerned about being seen there than actually hearing the band. I heard a lot of people complaining about the mostly 80s songs that DM played as opposed to his new stuff, was pretty impressed at the 2 hour45min length of the set though. I must admit I can't see what all the fuss is about but there is obviously a big following for DMB. The other problem I had was the Bose PA - very high power monotone base and overall reminded me of the Bose radio thing, what a coincidence!

I like DMB alot. I like their ideas, and their music. I agree it can sound rather similar. Jeremy do you know their music? It really helps to know the music, before you hear it live..
To me the music is interesting, with folky instrumentation and complex time signatures. I haven't heard any other band that sound like them either, which IMO is good. ( and no Hootie and the Blowfish sound nothing like them :-) )
I think 'Before These Crowded Streets' Album is a classic, and the others are not bad too. My first impressions, from more of a proggy background was 'blandness', but there is actually alot going on. I dislike the new 'official' album 'Everyday', and much prefer the Lillywhite sessions ( the album the band recorded and then scrapped!)
For the drummers out there Carter Beauford is a god really, well worth exploring!
My 2 dollars worth!!
Cheers

This reminds me of a very funny Onion piece where the P-Funk mothership lands at a Hooties concert, ending with:
quote:
According to police, no serious damage was caused by the incident, but it did result in a 45-minute concert delay, causing many in attendance to go to bed later than they had wanted to.
"I had a 9 a.m. meeting the next day with a very important client," said concertgoer/stockbroker James Norridge, 42, who did not go to sleep until well after midnight. "I really needed to be at the top of my game."
Norridge's disappointment was typical of the 17,456 whites in attendance.
"I did not wish to get 'funked up,'" said Roger Kleist, 33. "If I did, I would have attended a Dave Matthews Band concert."
For some reason that put me off investigating DMB further. They have practically zero presence in the UK.

Pete,
HA HA how did you know that I was in a state this morning?! I really find it difficult to get "funked up" at an outdoor venue with 40,000+!
Goose, thanks, I'll persevere some more. I actually have BTCS on vinyl and thought the sound was good but didn't listen much more than casually. I thought the drummer was very good indeed but wasn't enough to grab me. Actually I didn't spot different time signatures - all seemed to be rigidly 4/4 albeit with lots of funky and not so funky of beats and syncopation. Again, I'll listen some more since I have everything I need!

Jeremy, I really want a copy of BTCS on vinyl!! I really like it. I think the track 'Dreaming Tree' is an absolute classic. The drumming is phenomenal, and the music has lots of space, and the tin whistle even sounds haunting!
If you dont like the album , then there's a home for a vinyl version, in exchange for a CD!! I reckon after you get used to it, you will be hooked, I was!!
Enjoy
Goose!

I feel so lucky to get all this advice from you guys!
Anyway Goose, took a break from work at lunchtime to have a listen and you're right about everything including the tin whistle. It changes everything I was led to believe about this band. The problem was I never got to side 4!
I stand by what I said about the concert though. Dumb thing to say I know but it would be great to hear them in a small club. Thank God for Naim and vinyl.
As you might have guessed, I'm keeping the album - sorry! Should be fairly easy to find though, I think I got my copy at Tower. Terrific gatefold sleeve too.

So Dreaming Tree is a good track. But what on earth is it about? I think DM doesn't want us to know because I have no clue.

I've been turned off to recent rock stuff being a midlifer and remembering the 60's first hand and all the excitement. But a friend turned me on to DMB and I went out and got In Chicago thinking I'd go for a concert album and really enjoy it. He certainly knows how to play the crowd and vary the music and definitely like his 'All Along the Watchtower" tho I do think it's second to good ol' Jimmy with flaming guitar. Local reviewer didn't like his latest album so I'll skip this one.

Hi Guys
I think the new DMB is for me the worst DMB so far. Apparently they recorded and album, then ditched it as they said it was too depressing and too much of the same as before. The album they ditched is/was available on the web called 'The Lillywhite Sessions'...It sounds like DMB, very charateristc, but a bit depressing ( which I don't mind, I think it was probably too personal an album for Dave M possibly as it revolves around some personal lyrics )...
They got a new producer called Glen Ballard to produce them and a new sound and EVERYDAY was 'produced'..Songs are OK, but the production is far too 'mechanical' and lack the inspiration of the others in previous albums. Carter Beauford sounds like a drum machine!! Carlos Santana plays on it too..I think the producers wanted a new sound like they tried to do for Sanatana on 'Supernatural' :-) ( which is OK IMHO)
If you can get it cheap on CDWOW, then try it, but I wouldn't particularly buy it for an astronmical £15/16 in UK
But I would defintely see them live if you can, all superb musicians, and the bass player Stephan Lessard looks like Tim Henmans brother!!
Cheers
