New HDX-SSD - confusing behaviour...

Posted by: Billy Rubin on 10 September 2010

Am awaiting help from Phil but in the meantime, anyone over here have any ideas?

System is HDX-SDD / DC1 BNC-BNC / DAC / 555PS / Headline2 / Hicap2 / Powerline

NAS is attached via wired ethernet: Netgear ReadyNAS Duo with 2 x 1.5 TB Seagate Barracuda drives.

HDX behaving strangely from the start.

1 Only lists some but not all of albums in a NAS shared folder where I've placed standard resolution tracks (all files either flac or wav and none are DRM'd)

2 Shows a separate NAS shared folder where I've placed a mixture of flac and wav higher resolution tracks but won't actually see any of these tracks.

3 When playing in shuffle mode, will play each track for 20 to 30 seconds before shuffling to the next track.

4 Seems to rip OK but of 5 albums ripped so far, only lists two of them in database. And when I examine the Music Store folder (using my iMac), I can only see those two albums so have no idea where the other three were ripped to).

Re-booting both HDS-SSD and NAS hasn't helped.

Think I've got a dud?

I haven't got answers to all of your questions but two things worth checking are that your NAS Store is listed as the highest priority - check using Desktop Client and the music you can't find isn't appearing on the list of music somewhere different to where you expect it to be. Some downloaded Flacs have metadata that suggests to the HDX to list it as something other than you are expecting. This has confused me more than once.

Thank you for replying. How can I interrogate flacs etc to examine the metadata and correct anomalies?

I normally do this within Win 7. It's a bit easier to find apps in Windows for this but if you search for an app called Tag available from Soundforge you will find something that allows you to edit all the metadata. I tend to change the name of my hi-res artist to Artist 2496 as an example so it shows as a separate artist. Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice. A reboot of the HDX and the NAS last night seemed to cure problems 3 and 4 on my list, so I'll try to tackle problems 1 and 2 using your suggestions. Curiously, having been shut down with the front panel button last night, the HDX didn't wake up wihout being rebooted by using the rear panel rocker switch...

Well - I guess I'll reply to my own query in the hope that it will help others.

The HDX is particular regarding the folder structure for music on network *shares*.

It seems that the folder structure *must* be artist name > album name > tracks

It also seems that the presence of certain non-alphanumeric characters within the names of any of these folders will cause the HDX to simply ignore the entry completely.

For example, "The Beatles 24-48" seems to be OK, but "The Beatles 24/48" is not (I use this example as I have marked my high resolution content with this kind of a notation).

Another example, if you have only one track by a particular artist, the above folder structure still needs to be adhered to. So:

Juliana Reyes > Slowly

won't work, but

Juliana Reyes > Dominos > Slowly

is OK.

Although I haven't ready the manual from cover to cover, I haven't seen this explained anywhere. Probably needs a note in a future revision. Would have saved me some time...
