American Troubadour Music - Guy Clark

Posted by: Peter Stockwell on 25 July 2002

Live Music. Last night I went to the famous 'Hotel du Nord' in Paris, where a couple of nights a week they have essentially acoustic concertsts. If everybody behaves and squeezes in tightly there's maybe enough room for 200 people, probably less.

Last night's show was Guy Clark, with Verlon Thompson. Guy played songs from three Cds that are currently available 'Cold Dog Soup', 'Keepers' and 'Live at the Bluebird Cafe'(with Townes Van Zandt & Steve Earle). Guy writes and sings songs about Food, Old people, trains, Picasso and many other subjects. His style is very intimate and direct.

If you like songs that bring pictures to your ears then you could do a lot worse than try 'Cold Dog Soup', it's beautifuly recorded and contains about 12 songs with 'Cold Dog Soup' and 'Fort Worth Blues' being the favourites for me.

Is that the Steve Earle tune dedicated to the memory of the third one in the Bluebird Cafe' live album, the late Townes? It's a moving one.

I do believe it's Guy Clark that wrote the song, Steve Earle sings it on 'Corazon'.

Peter I really Guy Clark too, would love to see him live. The double CD with two albums Old No1 and Texas Cooking is very good.

This weekend there is a country music festival (yes!) in Craponne sur Arzon (Crap on what ???) in the Haute Loire, which is on the south east side of the Auvergne region of France.

Country Music in France ? Who'da thunk it, but yes, you can find about 3 country music Cds in most retalers like the FNAC, and in specialist stores like Gibert Joseph, blvd St Michel in Paris they Have 6, two of which are Guy's.

Joking aside, they love Tony Joe White over here and a fellow that is probably unheard of outside Austin, Tx, Calvin Russell.
