Rack, Shelves, Furniture: Any Ideas ?
Posted by: adamk on 02 December 2003
Me and the wife are expecting our first Nipper early next year.
My Audio gear is sited in my lounge and is on 2 Soundstyle stands.
I do not have the luxury of a seperate listening room .
Having had friend after friend round to visit, I have now had enough of the predictions of doom regarding my Naim gear and what an inquisitive baby/infant is going to do it (i.e. wreck it with a study stream of dirty fingers, smears etc etc.
So I hit on the idea of getting some form of protection - a rack with some audiophile properties that also offers some form of defense against unwanted attention.
Does anyone out there know of any rack/stand that can offer any defense against kiddie attack ??

My mate put a fire guard around his for the first few years until the meaning of 'no' was understood....

I have experienced similar problems and learnt the hard way (thank you Direct Line for a speedy re-imbursement) and now the LP12 sits on a wall shelf. It may be advisable to do the same with the cd player.
Generally, my two little ones have been very well behaved when it comes to the audio side - they do listen and they do understand the meaning of no. Best of all they quite like some of what I play - indoctrination starts young!!!

I too used a fire guard around the kit after one of my toddlers got the sellotape off that I was using to hold the Linn lid down and trashed a Linn Karma. Insurance replaced it. This was 12 years ago. Now my 3 teenagers just know that approaching within 5 feet of my kit is a capital offence.

Yikes, seems like I'm one lucky bloke for still having no kiddies myself

Luckily my Diapason speakers have a tightly screwed metal grill to protect the units.
(also looks kinda neat imho)
Ar for system support... I think 99% of all serious system supports are of an open construction.
So, when safety for you gear is priority nr.1, then some piece of purniture with (lockable) doors might be an option, and inside you might consider placing your gear on some sort of isolation platforms.

You could get a cabinetmaker to build a large lockable cabinet with no bottom in it. This could then sit over the top of your whole system, speakers excluded. Access to a TT could be provided via a heavy hinged lid. It might even improve the sound by cutting out air borne vibrations.

I hear you on this one. My solutions:
1. small elctrical fence - like those used for dogs - around your kit and a collar afixed to your infant.......or...
2. a nice quadraspire "QK" rack with a locking glass front panel.
