Are you after something regional from the likes of Fuchsia Dunlop
quote:
食在中国,味在四川
China is the place for food, but Sichuan is the place for flavour

The food of Sichuan province in southwest China is one of the world’s great cuisines. Its most famous characteristic is its fiery spiciness, which comes from the liberal use of chillies and lip-tingling Sichuan pepper. But hot and spicy is only part of the story. Sichuanese chefs are legendary for their ability to combine many different tastes into exquisite complex flavours. Some of these are robustly spicy, while others are delicate and teasing. And the use of chillies is so inventive that their taste never palls. In China, they say the variety of flavours used in Sichuanese cuisine is so dazzling that ‘each one of a hundred dishes will have its own, unique taste’.

At Bar Shu we want to bring you the best of the authentic flavours of Sichuan. So look out, among others, for the seductive ‘fish-fragrant’ combination of pickled chillies, ginger, garlic and spring onion, the addictive fieriness of ‘numbing-and-hot’ flavoured dishes, and the refreshing tones of a ‘ginger-juice’ sauce. We hope you enjoy your food.

or something that is slightly less focused but sticks well to your ribs and does not cost a king's ransom?

If you can be tempted by a great Japanese, healthier, and cheaper, then Tokyo Diner.

Put Tokyo Diner London into Google, tried links, but they didn't work. There are reviews linked to that search. Don't go to www.tokyodiner.com, seems to be something different.

Chicken Katsu curry, mild, with rice is lovely. A small bowl of miso soup with it is lovely.

The noodle soups are great. So is Oyako Don, rice with vegetables and a lightly cooked egg.

Don't be putt off by the idea of suschi, you try it if you want, but the other dishes are lovely, and very palatable to western tastes. One of my favourite restaurants in London. Pretty informal, between a restaurant and a cafe/noodle bar.

I have often eaten there for between £6 and £15 a head. You can pay more if you wish to eat more, but £15 has got me pretty full there in the past.

Seconded on the chinatown suggestion but avoid the flashy-looking places (expensive for tourists) and look for the ones with vinyl benches and formica tables where the Chinese will be eating in.

Denis & Lontano any preferences?

Scotty,
Is there a particular road(s) that constitutes "China Town"?

Yes there is a road right behind LS - Gerrard Street, a bit of Wardour St and Lisle Street. Howard we are spoilt for choice. I suggest we just choose on the night. It is normally humming in the area and as Scotty says they are all pretty good.

Howard,

As Adrian said we can choose on the night. Really looking forward to the Premier, especially as I had to miss Pavement last week due to a training course.

Dave

Thanks for your concern, but sadly no job yet. I got funding for PRINCE2 Project Management training and will add the certification to my CV. The evening will be a pleasant distraction from my current situation.

Not bad the last time I was in.

However never found an exciting Chinese Restaurant in the area some have been fine without being mouthwatering but on second visit haven't been that good. I even have a relative who cooks in one of them (my wife is Chinese).

Theres a fabulous Sushi bar that's close to Piccadily and for the life of me I can't remember it's name. You go downstairs to it (just in case anyone knows where I am talking about)and it's on the Regent Street end. Never had a bad meal there. Only has about 20 seats.

One place I haven't been yet so maybe next time down. However I am always sceptical about modern Chinese Cuisine as it tends to incorporate European styles within it's cooking.
