Thank goodness no-one has mentioned Vista yet for a while.

Is this yet another Italian scooter, or is this a new pre-packaged curry?

Cheers

Microsoft lopped bits off Vista to get it out of the door. One really, really, really, really important thing that's missing is the DirectSound hardware abstraction layer, meaning:

*** all our soundcards are stuffed!! ***

That's pretty much final, no HAL: no sound party. Creative have been knocking up a work around via OpenAL but it's application specific. Silly Microsoft. Multiboot, I think.

and also the dealers and distributors and education organisations giving out classes for BOFHs and PFYs all for money, and for the migrators and tech support types who will work long paid hours learning how to control a new set of bugs

And also for all the Software makers who will use the excuse of a new version of 'doze to ship a new version of their unique product.

I mentioned Vista to the bods on our IT department and they went into hissy fits - we're not going there, rubbish, etc. I didn't bother to ask why, given that I have a mac at home which seems to work just fine.

Yeah I spoke to the guy who runs our local Computer shop and he raised eyebrows about Vista not been very good, but he's used the Beta version, so it ain't gonna be perfect. It is gonna happen whether they like it or not.

"Microsoft Windows Vista is designed to dramatically improve the computing experience of every kind of PC user—from people at home who use their PCs for simple web browsing, to business people who must organize and act on large volumes of data, to scientists who routinely perform complex mathematical analysis. To make sure that everyone has an offering tailored to meet their specific needs, Microsoft will deliver five different editions of Windows Vista. Each edition is focused on the needs of a specific type of person."

people said ME was crap. and they were right, for once. they said 2000 was crap (I mean, a more usable, better integrated and stable NT4.0 with decent UI - gasp!), they said XP was crap and flakey, they're saying it about Vista. How many of these smug naysayers are doing it from the comfort and functionality of Windows 3.11?

FWIW, if you've plenty of grunt in your PC (I mean LOTS - min 1GB RAM, a dual-core processor, and a shit hot very very new video card, Vista (I've seen the final release in action) looks very, very cool. There are also some great enhancements in the new Office. Aero, the new enhanced UI (that doesn't come in the basic version) is particularly cool - and of course, drives all that extra horsepower you need to run it when you shell out more clams for that premium version. many will "wait until SP1" before adopting.

or there's OSx.

7 versions - there are EU versions without the media stuff.

I've been running Vista Business RTM for a few weeks and Ultimate RC1 and Beta for months, and I like the, even without the Aero video effects.

But...I couldn't use RDP to get into Business RTM. Also, I believe that most graphics chips sold in the last 2 years will work under Vista - but most of the chips sold will not support Aero.

And Vista does use resources - disk, processor, and memory.

And consumers who buy new PCs after January 30 will get Vista (unless they buy NOS PCs with XP).

BTW, the reason I like find the interface is more usable an visible.

Vista is just an updated more bloated version of XP

As for Aero it is a waste of space.

In normal business use, I.e Microsoft Office, Email, 3Dis just unnecessary eye candy that slows down your PC.

Still the next update for XP should be good.

I don't think I've ever seen the Blue Screen Of Death on XP, but apparently Vista early versions not only had BSoD but a Red Screen of Death too!!! I bet there will be lots going back to XP after a few weeks. It is after all very stable.

Presumably it's free then; as I only need Windows to run the installer for AmigaOS. Perhaps I'll just run AmigaOS under Parallels Desktop on my Mac and not bother with a PC.

Vista Home Premium upgrade seesm to be coming in at about £120 or so. The OEM version - presumably intended for installation on new machines - comes in at about £70 and is freely available for over-the-counter purchase as a one-off.

I can't see the hook sticking out of the bait. Why should I not just buy the OEM version?
