Vista- Microsoft

Thank goodness no-one has mentioned Vista yet for a while.

I haven't seen the aero stuff, since my Vista machine's video card doesn't qualify, but text is more readable on Vista than on XP.
That's not unnecesary eye candy.

I think that in reality the sensible people's suggestion that one waits a year/reviews situation/gets the heck out into any OS that works with hardware/software you want is worth following.
This is despite fact that I want to play with Vista/wandered around various emporia yesterday - physical and webbie - and managed to avoid buying something new/overpriced (not so much the PCs - just the OS ...).
So far since 1989 I have purchased 20 computers with different OS just so I can play with OS (I have 6 left - all of which work wonderfully with software I run thereupon).
IMO Win XP as is now 5+ years after 25-10-2001 is the best.
I am just off to Comet to buy/avoid a cheap laptop.
I am convinced that in Work situations Win 3.1 was/is as good is workers needed ....

I remember trying XP when it first came out to find no support for my printers and plotters, among other things, so it came off again until things sorted themselves out - about 18 months. This time I'll upgrade my PC in a year or so with a dual core and Vista installed. I think XP is by far the best Windows OS to date. Anyone know what XP stands for? And why Vista?

No idea what 'XP' means - 'extra something', presumably. But 'Vista' - perhaps the view through yer Window...?

If Apple were a hifi brand what would it be....
B&O? pretty, but grossly overpriced?
Bose? Not available in the high street?
More likley a Sony Betamax machine...vastly superior but not campatable or popular.
Good job they have that ipod thing or they would go bust again...

I think you will find Mac sales have gone through the roof since the introduction of the intel based systems.
Dell and other PC manufacturers are very worried by vista as it will not run on budget PC's, which accounts for the majority of their sales.
The price difference between a Mac and PC capable of running Vista is very small indeed. When you consider that only the Mac can run both OS x and win XP/Vista, Dell and other's are worried.
Apple are doing very well at the moment and it's future looks very good indeed.

I think you'll find that "Dell and other PC manufacturers" (such as the market leader HP) will in fact be welcoming Vista as it will re-envigorate a somewhat stagnant hardware market.
To take your given example of Dell, all of their systems currently on sale now come with Vista - they've had years to prepare... do you think they'd really allow themselves to be cut out of their main market (which is most likely business clients) by the release of a new OS?

Yeah, how far will your win 3.1 workers get when they need to connect and send digital images for their work, or conduct a video conf desk-to-desk to a colleague in another country, or share desktops with remote colleagues while on an audioconference, or burn CD's to courier to a client.... the real productivity tools that have been provided as the OS has matured are often overlooked.

It is probably a proven fact that using PCs etc at work often is unproductive (so many 'workers' play online-at games ...) - unless you make/sell them/programmes etc.
When I used/use PCs at work, important functions are not anything other than number-crunching/database/word-processing - none of which need internet.
I have bought too many computers, especially at home and as a dedicated Amiga or MS XP expert I am astounded to say that the newish Vista is excellent.
If you do not wish to fork out for overpriced new OS which doubtless will fail to work with many old drivers - don't.
I am very happy to play with Vista on cheap play-machine, and will continue to use XP m/cs for work.
Although Vista unnecessarily looks nice (as did previous 3 MS OS for me ...), it is more secure - maybe for a while - as is its Webmail function. On new portable after 14 hours settin it up how I like, I was thrilled to find it imported my old Address Book/Internet Favourites at a doddle (Google to find out how if you ar really a dunce as I).
As a XP lover /purchaser frequently, I only recently discovered that e.g. if you spent £150 on Vista Home Premium to stick on beloved not totally new m/c-GFX adaptor combo etc, that you can when old m/c is no longer usable move your licence to new m/c.
a) Buy adequate (can be as little as £400) m/c with Vista H. Premium installed.
b) The above.
c) Ensure that if m/c is portable that it has proper soundcard with WAV-recording onboard!!!

Now we're talking real computers

My Amiga died, but I have Amiga Forever on an Intel PC and it's great - though I do tend to use a Mac for most things these days.
