Hi-cap or PSX... Geneva

Posted by: Christopher on 24 September 2001

Hi-Fi dealer in Geneva is recommending a 2nd hi-cap for my 82 rather than putting the money towards a PSX for my CDX... any views (I've not heard the effect of either yet)?
The advice may be somewhat biased by him having an ex-demo Hi-Cap in stock but no PSX...

P.S. Any of you music enthusiasts local to Geneva? razz

The 2nd Hi-Cap adds a nice boost, but it's quite small compared to the 1st Hi-Cap.

The XPS, in contrast, is a great, big, huge jump!!!

However, I suggest that you don't trust your dealer or me. wink Listen to it for yourself, and then you'll know which way to go. smile

s/h XPS don't come up very often.

If you're set on a s/h one you may have to wait some time, so maybe the 2nd HiCap could be useful. This is on the basis that it would be a short-term measure, with XPS to follow.

One word of caution - each HiCap ends up driving one of the two channels, so if one is much better than the other (much newer or recently serviced) you could get a difference in the performance of the two channels.

I've had a 2nd HICAP on my 82 for about a month now and it has made a significant difference to my ears. The music flows much better with very much better dynamics and useful widening of the frequency range.

I intend to go the XPS route too but not for a little while so I consider the HICAP to be a very useful stopgap.

About the same money as a s/h Hi-Cap and a much bigger improvment.

Thanks for the advice.

However, what's a CDPS? Never heard of it!

The CDPS was the external power supply used with the CDS (a.k.a. CDS1). Some people are upgrading their CDS1 to CDS2. When they do this, they can use their existing CDPS with a modified burndy cable, or buy an XPS. Those who buy an XPS need to sell the CDPS.

It's not quite as good as an XPS (some say 75%), but it's definately an improvement on a bare CDX.
