Anything special about Mogul PC

Posted by: Guido Fawkes on 01 July 2010

Chord who make the splendid budget DAC with BT interface has released a PC as part of its new range - is there something special about this that would make it a good partner for a Naim DAC (if I could get over my stance on Windoze). It just looks like something you could pick up in the supermarket to me.

What I wanted was a BT to S/PDIF for my Naim DAC, but a PC ????????????

Agree with that.

Despite the fact that I have used Windoze for half my life, using it to do audio work is just a nightmare. And despite being a first time Mac user, I find using Mac it to do home work is cakewalk.

I see nothing special in the specs

Actually its quite underpowered imho. I'd keep away and go Atom or minimac

Still not solved the transport problem - currently using the old Yammy which works - thinking my MacBook Pro will be fine when I get the Hi-Face EVO and something to raise it off the shelf for ventilation. Perhaps replacing its hard drive with some SSD will keep it cool and relegating storage to a DAS.

I'm totally unsure about whether the UnitiServe will be for me - I'm just not in sync with some of Naim's digital sources (other than the great CDPs of course). I think if it had been built on open source code then I'd have gone with it. I don't like having to use Ethernet to connect it to my Network to use an iPod Touch to control it either - why not a Wireless connection for non-music functions like connecting to AMG/GraceNote.

I do not want to use Ethernet cabling and connect to a NAS, as that is just not viable without drilling holes in the wall and I'd sooner cut cane for Castro than do that. My router is in my office, not adjacent to the hi-fi.

I really want a transport - functionally the MacBook Pro is perfect as it can use wireless to connect to the Internet for software updates and GraceNote to get track details. It just sounds a bit naff through its optical out, but a Hi-Face EVO can put that right and allow me to put on a shelf a little bit away from my Fraim. The big advantage over the MiniMac is it has a screen and keyboard attached so it is easy to drive.

As a CD transport my current thoughts are the April Music CD transport. Decided to keep my CDX2 as it is - connected to a nice Stax energiser.

Obviously I haven't been able to test it with Unitixxx, but I set up a wireless bridge from my PopcornHour which I use as a networked mediaplayer to my dual band router and have a wired ethernet from my NAS to my router. So that is Pocorn with cat5 connected to my 802.11n Bridge, the Bridge has a wireless connection to my dual band router via 802.11n on the 5.2 GHz band and my NAS has a wired cat5 ethernet connection to my router.

The Bridge is about 5 meters from my Hifi and the NAS is in my study on the next floor.

It works great without any issues and I believe the recent advice from Naim was not to use 2 wireless connections between mediaplayer and NAS, but they did't advice against using one as I have.

You should give it a try and see how it works for you.
