President Mackerras

A week or two ago they made Charles Mackerras the honorary president of the Edinburgh festival (a post that has only previously been filled by Menuhin and which has been vacant since his death). Couldn't have gone to more deserving chap, but then I would say that. However, the scope of his involvement in the festival over the years, as Mills (the director) reeled off in his brief speech is quite impressive - 87 performances (indeed, I recall a couple of years ago when the Festival chorus had its 50th birthday, he headed the list of conductors who'd worked with them most).
