Ever had to tell folk to shut up in a cinema?

Posted by: David S Patterson on 08 November 2008

Just been to see the new Bond movie (which i thought was great),but for the first time was moved to shout at kids making a bloody noise in the auditorium.Have to say i was alarmed when before it started kids as young a five were being escorted in with "adults" At the end of the day i blame the adults for even bringing them , but what about disciplining them (couldnt do that now could they).I had my kids of 8, 11 and 15, and not a pip out them appart from whispering to me to pass the grub along , which i usually hog!

Many years ago when The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were all the rage I took my 2 young sons to see the movie and foolishly decided to watch it with them. It was a matinee. As you can imagine I was the oldest person there by about 40 years and as soon as the film began it was bedlam. It was like a Muppets show with all manner of things being hurled round the theatre and kids making an absolute racket. I seem to remember I lasted about half an hour whereupon I stood up and bellowed "SHUT UP!" as loud as I could.
They did. Enough for me to get forty winks during the rest of the film!

Yes I've had to do it on several occasions, mostly involving young teenagers, but once or twice with adults. I'm sure you've come across the type. One sits all the way through asking "Who's that?", "What's that?", "Where's that?", "What did he say?", "Why did that happen?", etc etc. Maybe if you just shut up and listened to the movie you'd have your answers!

When I saw "Quantum of Solace" there was a couple with a babe in arms who cried and gurgled all the way through. The cinema management just shouldn't let that happen. It really infuriates me, particularly as my own kids have been film buffs since they were real youngsters and have behaved impeccably at every movie they've ever been to. I don't even like chattering during the ads and previews. Once the lights are out I like to gently slip into the alternate movie world.

I normally find it is the adults.

Last year I had to endure two Aussie women yabbering all the way through a Steely Dan show. When I politely asked them to STFU they took exception and became even louder. I did not enjoy the show. Had the same at the Eagles as well. Then there was the girl at a Coldplay concert who decided to scream all the way through the show - thought I was going to go deaf with all her loud squeals. That is the problem with arena gigs - it attracts too many people who actually have little interest in music and are out for a social instead.

Ronnie Scotts club in London always had noise problems as well.

Talking at gigs is just damn rude. Between songs I think is ok but yakking on is ignorant.

Hey if you had come seen Steely Dan with us Naim boys last year there was only a hushed reverence Big Grin

DURING THE PERFORMANCE STFU

That used to be written in big letters behind the stage at the Jazz Cafe in Camden.
Dunno if it's still there ...

That's how I see it - ignorant. Anyway next time they come round I'd love to attend the show with you chaps.

555 - think I might get a t shirt made up with that phrase that I can wear to the show for all those around me to read. Big Grin

Has anyone thrown a cell phone? You know, when some peanut-brain incessantly blabbers on their phone during your once-in-a-lifetime favourite artist's gig (only pausing to distract you further by using said phone to take shitty picture) to the point where you just snap, grab the cell-phone from said plonker's grasp and hurl it against the nearest hard surface?

OK then, who hasn't at least fantasised about doing this?

That's why I've got myself a really good Home Cinema system!

It really p*sses me off when folk talk through films. Unfortunately one of the worst transgressors is my mother-in-law.

There were a couple of tossers at the Porcupine Tree concert many of us went to the other week; some bloke decided to just stand up in front of everyone seated - he was very quickly told to sit the F*ck down!

Saw Quantum of Solace this afternoon in one of Bluewater's 'Gallery' cinemas. That's a two seater sofa with trays and loads of legroom. £32 for two people, including snacks and certain drinks. NO KIDS! NO NOISE!

A tad expensive, but well worth it as a treat, and the living room is clear of zero WAF equipment.

Having two youngsters a trip to the cinema is a treat and after paying for babysitters an expensive treat, people should remember that and be QUIET! I had the second Lord of the Rings spoilt by some stupid teenager who was creating a fuss and the last James Bond film spoilt by kids who eventually got thrown out ten minutes from the end. No usherettes these days and people don't seem to have any consideration any more. Respect to my Mum who told two nattering women in front of her at the ballet to be quiet, they did but tried to pick an argument at the interval, didn't get very far though!

....Jeeez you can tell I don't go to the pics very often! Is it really that bad?

...Irrespective of how good the movie is I'll nearly always nod off and find a completely different plot taking shape when I wake up....and obviously I don't DARE ask the missus what's happening!

...If you want peace and quiet (and can afford it) try watching footy at the Emirates Stadium .....no noise there! Winker
