Ketil Bjornstad - report for Expat in Oz
Posted by: Ian G. on 22 March 2006
Some months ago I asked for some input on Ketil Bjornstad to decide whether to check him out live. I got some good tips and a request from Expat in Oz to tell how it was if I chose to go. So here it is now.
I went along to the Queen's Hall last night and had a really good evening. Together with some really excellent musicians they put on a show of great variety and unfailing interest. Arlid Andersen on bass, and Eivind Aarset on guitar sttod out for me as guys capable of unusual things with their instruments. (stop smirking at the back!)
They played a 1st set from the 'Before the night' album which was excellent with haunting electric cello and guitar seasoned with piano throughout. Not at all what I expected from the evening, much more prog. rock than chill-out jazz, but good all the same.
Then came a more traditional jazz set which really showed off Andersens wonderful bass playing.
They rounded of with the Seafarer's Song, which
adds a volcalist to the mix in a long piece about the ocean.
Overall they played for 2hrs 30min and were much appreciated by the half full hall.
So thanks to those who encouraged me to go I had an very enjoyable evening - and found a CD or two to buy!.
