Chaps
I used to have a combined kitchen / dining room which measured 27 ft long x 13 wide.
My secondary system, which is in this room, consists of the following
CD3.5 + Hicap/ 32.5+Hicap / 140 / Linn Sara's
The Sara's were pointing down the room and sounded great even though I know that the 140 ought to be replaced by the 250. The music which came from thie system sounded good and basically I was very happy with it.
However, last year, we had the kitchen revamped and my wife had the room more or less divided into two small rooms by having a 7ft wide wall built with a 6 ft wide gap connecting the two rooms.
The dining room now measures 13 ft x 13 ft and somehow the Sara's dont seem to sound right compared to how they used to.
I have been told that small rooms and Sara's do not mix and that possibly I should replace the Sara's with another set of speakers, such as, for instance, some Kans.
I know nothing about speakers and any comments would be useful.
I am totally flexible on price and am happy with either new or second hand.
Many thanks
Mick

mick, i suspect that room acoustics have deteriorated somewhat with the new dimensions, which are quite to a cube -- assuming more or less same height within 2 ft.
i am no acoustic engineer, but i would in the first instance try to arrange furniture round the room to destroy as much of its regular shape as you can -- appropriate ceiling lights, etc..
i have fond memories of linn sara's in an all vinyl system a long time ago..
enjoy...

Mick,
The Linn Sara's where a special pair of speakers in their time, and I would question whether the Naim CD3.5/32.5/140 and hicaps would get the best out of the Sara's. The sara's are a demanding pair of speakers and demand a power amp as good as a 250' or 135's to get the best out of them.
Before you ditch the Sara's arrange a demonstration to hear them perform with a better power amp and then ask yourself, do I really want to ditch the Sara's?
If you do decide that the Sara's have to go, try listening to the new Epos 12's they are an excellent speaker for the price and have similar characteristics of the Sara's but not as demanding, they will be more suited to your current system.

just to put in another good word for the saras. I've had a pair for several years that i bought 2nd-hand, used mainly with an LP12/Akito/K18 and 32.5/110. The sound was very good, but recently I have upgraded to a Lingo, EkosII, and karma, and also a 180. The difference is phenomenal: real power, dynamics, weight, and detail which just weren't there before. This just shows what a good speaker the sara is, doesn't it, allowing the music to shine through as never before.
