Hi Fred,
Another good one gone, I must dig out his vinyl again and give it another spin.

I will not lie; I shed tears this morning in learning about the death of Freddie Hubbard, my favorite trumpet player. No one comes close to his combination of style, technique and exuberance. (Eat our heart out, Wynton!) In 1972, I was an aspiring musician when three of my band members snuck into a nightclub in Chicago to hear Mr. Hubbard play. In the first set, someone from the audience called out for him to play a song to which he responded with a barrage of unprintable language, shutting the guy up. Afterwards, we approached him at the bar, bought him a drink and meekly asked him to play “Red Clay”. We told him we had just been practicing the song and would like to hear it. I thought we would get the same treatment as the other guy, but he was so gracious and said “ anything for young musicians”. He started the next set with it and showed us we had a long way to go! I just listened to his solo on “First Light”, which features so many aspects of his wonderful playing, but the fade made me emotional because it was like he was leaving the stage. God bless you, Freddie. Thanks for so much great music! Get back together with Joe Henderson and make great celestial sounds

Another giant of jazz, gone. Seems like the masters are making a mass exodus.

Played "Ready For Freddie" last night in your honor!
