Ittok III replacement?
Posted by: RoyleBlue on 15 February 2004
Have got upgraditis.
Have a fully specc'd LP12 (Cirkus, Trampolin etc., also Nordost Quatro-Fil TT cable which made a big difference) but my arm is which I think needs upgrading.
Cartridge is an Ortofon Kontrapunkt b.
I see 3 choices - Aro, Ekos or one of the Origin Live models (can get an Encounter for about £500).
What should I go for?

You could also "prefix" first ? Don't forget Ittok III was very good and came very close to Ekos I.

If you have Valhalla or earlier, have a listen to a Lingo.

Hi Carl
This was not my experience. Ekos was, for me, a big jump.

RoyalBlue, you missed your 4th choice;save your money and ENJOY what you've got.
i lost an ITTOK111 last year due to an unfortunate accident and had it repaced by the EKOS....i still miss my TIKTOK...a really fine arm.

TOKSIK,
I have a spare LV3 bought new from Stereo Stereo. Can drop it off in Glasgow for you.
Happy to take your Ekos in part exchange. ;O)

I just bit the bullet and have had my dealer order an ARO for me (along with a Prefix). Good luck.

I once spent a night with a friend Linn (non-Naim) dealer trying to establish whether, within an LP12 context, the 'source first' approach made sense (this was a long time ago, actually shortly after the introduction of the Lingo1, must have been 1990).
Lingo really beated everything (Lingo/Basic/K9 less detailed but in the opinion of all three present more enjoyeable than non-Lingo/EkosI/Troika). EkosI/Asaka was also (marginally) better than Ittok3/Troika (both Lingo'ed) but the latter combination (marginally) less expensive...
So if you don't have a separate power supply, yes, go for that first (Armageddon and Lingo2 are probably the main contenders, although there's a recent review in Hi-fi News on a Origin Live PS perhaps also worth audtioning).
On the other hand, I'm not sure where the Naim Prefix fits in: my Dealer In Whom I Trust (1st commandment) tells me Ittok3 is so good I would be a bit out of my mind to go from a used Ittok3 (now with Klyde) to a new Ekos if I could use the money elsewhere, so I'm thinking, as I suggested, to 'prefix' my Lingo1/Ittok3/Klyde before upgrading to Ekos, Lingo2, or another cartridge.
Anyone have experience with this?

Carl

Carl,
I added a Hicapped Prefix to my LV111/v2 (Lingo 1, MC Rohmann) about 18 months ago. Very worthwhile. By losing the tonearm cable the LP12 tracks better, and the Prefix adds more life to the music. In addition details become clearer, and imaging improves. I have a couple of records that appeared to have pressing errors One of them is by JJ Cale (the one that looks like the Gitanes pack). After playing with the Prefix it becomes clear that the 'pressing error' is caused by an out of time drummer. Now I don't care too much about that, but it gets the point across that the Prefix can resolve details rather well.
Only downside is that you have to use mute when you turn the sides over because if the mat sticks to the LP, and you get a static discharge as the mat hits the deck, you'll hear it loud and clear from the speakers.
Cheers,
Jens

I cannot speak about the Prefix option, but having just gone from Lingo 1 to 2, I can recommend this route pretty much without reservation. Have an A/B demo and you will instantly hear what I mean. I don't think I am unique in this view.

Cheers - by the sounds of it I should keep the Ittok.
Rest of my tt setup (should have added to begin with) is Lingo 1 and Michell Iso/Hera phono stage.
? should I look at getting he Ittok rewired and a better phono stage such as the Trichord Delphini II or Tom Evans Groove?
