SongBook Naim

Seems this App for iPhone / iPad was released on November 2 :

The publicity states "lets you control your entire network of Naim digital network players.... includes the Naim HDX range as well as the Uniti range". Cost is £29.99.
Has any Mac user tried it yet ?

My best guess for favourites is the "save" button, not that I can get it to work! This is a very ropey app indeed. It really needs a manual, but perhaps that would only serve to highlight its shortcomings. N-Serve may be lagging behind the iPad and waiting for the iOS update but it works very in a slick way. I guess you can't beat good code. Songbook behaves like a school project where only the people who wrote it seem to know how to use it, and they certainly don't know how it works. Volume control for HDX indeed! But you can squeeze internet radio out of it. No settings on the HDX need to be changed.

It seems like a "no" - but you just have to wait and hope for the best.
The Songbook app seems written by developers who have never written communications software before. It is mostly totally unresponsive while they wait for answers etc. On top of this it certainly crashes a lot.

I've got Songbook on my iPad. It's recognized my HDX and NAS. It also shows Radio Time, and lists dozens of stations. Problem is - I haven't got a clue how to use it. I touch on the name of a track or station, and the selection shakes from side to side, as though saying "No" and denying me access. Is there something I need to do to the settings of the HDX?

Just out of curiosity.... why are people using this rather than the n-Serve and n-Stream apps?
thx,

Patrick, the explanation is simple: the Songbook Naim App gives access to the vTuner in the HDX and thus enables internet radio on the HDX! If Naim would finally get its act together and also enable internet radio through its own n-serve app (or at least indicate if and when this will be the case) there would be no need for HDX owners to reach out for third party apps. It is also striking that there has not been one reaction from Naim on this thread so far.

I purchased the n-Serve app when it was first released and find it very easy to use. Does everything I need to control the HDX. I purchased the songbook app for internet radio only.
Comments to date are - volume control does not work but I have the pre amp remote for that.
Searching artists/albumns etc works the same as the n-Serve.
Internet radio takes a while to search for all the stations & you can not access one until the search has finished.
I emailed the help line about saving stations to avoid the long search each time. It is not possible but they did say I was the first to ask for it & they would include it with the next update (are you listening Naim! )
You can view the last 25 visited stations which loads quickly, not possible to delete any that you dont want though.
I also asked the helpdesk if it is possible to listen to a programme if I missed it first time around. I am waiting for an answer on this.
My conclusion is that I am happy with it and would probably not have bought the n-Serve if songbook came out first. I will continue to use both.
Regards Jon
Not had a problem with the connection dropping out at all.

Internet radio. I couldn't resist. It's clunky but it works. I was seriously considering buying a SB just for radio - not server. This app costs a fraction and it's using a pre existing function of the HDX for something I thought the HDX couldn't deliver yet. When all playback, browsing, searching and radio functions are unified in a Naim app for iPad I'm confident it will be my only resource. Until then I can deal.

Simple reason n-stream works within the limitations of UPnP and so far has never crashed. IMHO Songbook doesn't work and does crash.
Any questions?

Any idea when mine will crash? It's been struggling (actually I think I've been struggling more)but it's stayed upright for three days. Does yours crash in days, hours or less?

If it works at all - maybe half an hour.

Installed this app yesterday, and I'm now a very happy chappy, with access to Internet Radio on my HDX - an early xmas gift!

Okay, now I'm impressed. It took several remove & reinstall cycles on my iPad, but the program finally works. I have internet radio - very cool. Haven't listened to any ripped music yet, so will reserve judgment for now. The volume control, by the way, doesn't work - mind you, I don't have a Naim preamp. I don't think the app's volume control works with the HDX either.

It doesn't.

The attenuation section can be controlled only through the netstream API and is not imposed through the UPnP protocol due to audio quality degradation, as stated by Naim - so, if a contol point does not implement the netstream API, as is the case with all UPnP control point applications, there is no chance volume control and mute can be controlled by this applications.

Had an email this morning saying 'It's not a current feature but could be added in the future as the HDX does support it'
BTW mine has worked without crashing since purchasing!
