Kirsty Maccoll

Posted by: Bruce Woodhouse on 27 December 2007

Xmas day at our house started as tradition dictates with 'Fairytale of New York' on repeat play for a while. One thing leads to another and we ended up having most of Kirsty Maccoll's back catalogue through the morning. Some wonderful bittersweet stuff. 'Days' can be played at my funeral...

Anyway to business. Has anyone splashed on the remasters, 'Kite' and 'the Titanic Days' 2 CD version in particular? If so how shiny and nice do they sound? Finally how about 'Tropical Brainstorm', I've never heard it on the back of unappealing reviews, should I give it a go?

No, it awful and I'm a KM fan of the highest order

Gary

Edit, in fact if you want to hear it I would happily send you my copy, that's how much I dislike it - give me an email if you want to take up the offer.

Thanks for the offer but you've managed to convince me to avoid it, I don't want to ruin my affection for her stuff!

Cheers

I think Tropical Brainstorm is fine.

I think you should accept Gary's offer and make your own mind up - bit radical, I know....

I like TB too. Sounds like a good offer to me.You could always pass it on your self if it's that bad.

Fantastic album - get it. It's a bit different, but when was that ever a problem!

Having "Tropical Brainstorm" and "Electric Landlady" I can only agree with Nigel.

She was really into the Mexican influence, but with some very clever tunes and words.

Now that's a fantastic record as is Kite

For those that are interested the 'Titanic Days' remaster is fine, some tracks almost transformed although others sound more or less unchanged. The second CD of oddities/B sides etc has some good moments and also includes 5 versions of 'Angel' which is pushing it a bit (although the unplugged piano version is great).

Bruce

...and Tropical Brainstorm did not do it for me I'm afraid.

You scum bag you faggot
You cheap lousey maggot
Merry Christmas my arse
I pray god its our last

Certainly give Jingle bells a run for its money

That and a vinyl single are all I currently have of the late Kirsty's musical output.
I still hate the fact that everytime I hear her mentioned I just think "speedboat" and how nasty a way to cut a career short.

I do have a couple more songs - she backs up Billy Bragg on a track or two that I own.

Briz,

Give me your details and I'll post you my original copy of Titanic Days if you wish. 'Kite' is probably the other 'essential'.

Along with Electric Landlady, of course.

Bruce, thanks for the kind offer but I am in Australia Cool so that would not be local postage.

It is likely to be available inexpensively from a local source so I will keep an eye open for it

Kite was on special so I grabbed that today. Not bad on first listen.
