I'm a massive fan of Loudon but most people Ive spoken to have never heard of him. Anyway if you are a fan I have just found his new UK tour dates...

I have History and Career Moves and particularly like the latter.

Any recommendations where to go from here for further purchases?

Thanks,
Thomas

Hi Thomas
I think Loudon is at his best when its just him and his guitar. So I would really recommend his first two albums. His first was just called "Loudon Wainwright III" and the second was called "Album II", if you prefer vinyl these show up on ebay from time to time, If CD's are your bag these two albums are available on one CD limited to 5000 copies only available online from: http://www.rhinohandmade.com/browse/productlink.lasso?number=7709 They are both superb! Out of the other CD's that are available I think "A Live One" is pretty damn good, again its just Loudon and his guitar. Oh and the new albums pretty good too!

Yes, that's the impression I get from Career Moves. Thanks for your tips, Kevin and bigtrak - will check them out.

Try "Love Songs" - Don't be put off by the title I think a certain irony was at work when he conjured it up. Hard Day on the Planet sounds totally contemporary and I Eat Out has to be the most incendiary song ever written about being alone and feeling odd. Beautiful production too.

As for other faves I agree on the one man and a guitar thing. The first 3 are great. Attempted Moustache is my favourite.
Fame and Wealth and Therapy are full of angst if you're in the mood.

I have no idea on the CD versions BTW. All my copies are on vinyl. Who said nostalgia was last years thing?

the reason I ask is that my next door neighbour, when he moved gave me his record collection and there are loads of Loudon Wainright albums. But I've not got round to playing them yet.

I first came across LW III playing 'live', thanks to the John Peel show. His best performances are always live, IMHO.

The 'BBC Sesions' is a must as is 'A Live One'.

U.S. and Canada tour dates availble Here and lots of interesting links/interviews/stuff Here

Son of Loudon and Kate McGarrigle(of the famed McGarrigle sisters) his first album (S/T 1998) is an excellent piece of work...check it out

If you like Loudon...try Rufus..

I just saw Rufus live last night. He had a full band, along with his sister, Martha (who's also good, but hasn't got a "record deal" yet.)

Personally, I prefer Rufus over his father, although I like Loudon too.

While buying a boatload of records last week, I saw this album in the dollar bin and picked it up. I hate it. All his other records were of the three dollar variety so it leaves me wondering whether this is his "bad" record since it wasn't mentioned on this thread.

(FWIW, the recording is good.)

P.S.
Being a big hockey fan, the song on T Shirt about hockey is so bad it almost made me puke! A folky acoustic song singing the words "Stanley Cup"? Give me a break.

Apparently loudon hates that album as well.
