Christmas music
Posted by: Mike Hughes on 30 November 2008
I'm looking to add a small amount (say 5 for arguments sake) of CDs that would constitute a decent collection of classic(al) Christmas music. Looking for something beyond the "Best Christmas album in the world ever"!!! Already got that. It isn't!!!

Votes for Beecham, Davies or the other one (!)?

Mike,
For a first version, the Beecham may be a little heady. But, I would not be without it. See whether you can pick up a reasonably priced 2nd hand version via Amazon Marketplace or any other online retailer.
Best,

ROTF,
It was solely a reference to the Ch** and D***!!!
I love early Mary Chapin Carpenter but found she has latterly been dwarfed by the back on form Shawn Colvin, Jonatha Brooke etc. Her Christmas stuff passed me by so I will certainly be exploring at some point. However, my priority here is classical Christmas material.
Huwge - The Beecham is available new on Amazon UK on CD, which is my format here.

Last night on pbs i heard a new group, Tonic-Solfa, singing christmas carols. their arrangements were fresh and inviting, they had great stage presence, and they sang terrific.
going to order the dvd this weekend!

For Messiah, I would go with the Pinnock, Auger, Tomlinson, but I also have a very good recent version by Paul McCreesh with the Dunedin Consort. This has no star soloists but has a wonderfully natural feel to it.
The current issue of "BBC Music Magazine" has a cover CD of Christmas music. I haven't listened to it yet, but no doubt in the fullness of time....
Regards,
Ken

Bach's Christmas Oratorio should be on the list of suggestions I would have thought.
Wonderfully uplifting music, my favourite recording is John Eliott Gardiner 1986 on Archiv. Available on CD (and also on vinyl but rare as hens' teeth)

Glad to hear you're an MCC fan - here is a nice classical Christmas album

The Song the Virgine Soong - Christmas Music from Tudor England by the Cambridge Tavener choir, which specialises in recreating music of the European Renaissance and in this case Tudor England. This is really fine recording too. Every bit as good as C'n'D IMHO (no reason why I can't like both).

There is a lovely concerto by Correlli, probably called Concerto for Christmas Night, which I have on vinyl but I'm sure there must be cds. I also have a fab cd of traditional, christmas songs, but not hymns, by a Breton choir.
Then are sugary confections by Diana Krall and not so sugery ones by Bruce Cockburn and another by the Blind Boys of Alabama (not that good I think but entertaining. My favorite cd is a Viper issue of primarily reefer songs from the 50/early 60's.
Sorry still at work, I will try to dig them out and give you proper titles later.

Fans of Kate Rusby are probably aware that she is just about to release a Christmas album.
But just in case you didn't:
