Avantgarde Uno's

Posted by: icon2d4 on 08 April 2003

Has anyone tryed Naim amps with Avantgarde speakers, wish to run 52/4*135/Snaxo with Uno's. Avantgarde say I have to set the Snaxo to 150-200hz does anyone know how to this, or how to biamp two 135's together. Don't tell me to buy a pair of SL2's heard apair the other day with 552/500 not impressed.

You will have to get Naim to modify a SNAXO in order to adjust the crossover points.

It may also be a bit more complicated than that, e.g. in drive unit overlap, etc. Give Naim a call.

cheers, Martin

Given the Uno's extremely high sensitivity, why go active?

Many amps produce higher distortion at very low outputs. Does anyone know if Naim amps are subject that that effect?

Regards.

I believe that Avantgarde is made for OTL amps.
Don't you think so?

...the Duos on the end of an 82-based system and the Duos hissed quite a bit. The dealer opined that Naim preamps were too noisy for the insanely efficient Duos. It could have been the source component or something else - I didn't reach the end of the story with the dealer (he fiddled with the Duos for a month) so don't know the final conclusion.

I've also heard Duos at the end of Naim amps and it's a bad mix; lots of hissing, as Greg said. Most of the power from those 135s will be wasted; a Nait 1 is already more power than hornspeakers like these (with powered subs) need. I also doubt that the Naim amps' strengths, like speed and superb transient power, will do much into hornspeakers, which don't need the power and have no slam anyway. In general, Avantgarde speakers are about as far removed as one can get from Naim design philosophy, IME.

This is a questionable mixing of some very expensive components; I'd proceed with caution before making any investments in gear.

Unos do slam and speed in spades.

A Nait 1 or 2 would be more than enough power however.

Great speakers, not a typical horn, and I can't imagine anyone who's heard them being so dismissive. But it is an odd match you're proposing...

John,

Hornspeakers have great dynamic range, but they don't have any attack to speak of; there is no impact to the leading edge of dynamic transients. (I suspect that this has something to do with the fact that there is no large woofer cone moving the air in your direction).

You're free to disagree, of course. There was a discussion about this a while back, however. Here's the link:
http://forums.naim-audio.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=67019385&f=48019385&m=8501949095

As many posters in that thread noted, there is also a serious timing problem with hornspeakers using conventional subs.

Cheers,
Eric

Icon and J--

I've heard Unos and Duos reasonably extensively off a CDS2/52/500. I think they're quite good for horn speakers, with low quantities of horn coloration. They both sound rather mellow, with an obvious "cupped hand" coloration. They do scale, but I agree with Eric regarding the lack of attack.

I can see the appeal, but I'd take a variety of speakers over them. Purely personal preference, though.

Thanks for all your reply's, put me off the Uno's
a bit. Any ideas on speakers to try, at the moment
runing SBL's with CDS2/52/4*135's/Snaxo/Scap. Tryed
the SL2's but seem to be a bit light in the base,
could one try to increase the gain for the L/F on
the Snaxo.

Mike,

Could you give a more detailed report on the Solos??

Thanks
