Cable to suit CD5i and Nait5i?

Posted by: GrizzlyHippo on 01 November 2003

Hi, I'm new to the forums, so please be kind!

I'm just upgrading from an 8yr old Rotel CD/Amp & Kef Coda 7's system to a Naim CD5i and Nait5i together with some B&W CM2's. I want to know if anyone can recommend some speaker cable that I can lay under carpet (2 x 10m lengths needed) that will work well with the Naim equipment as I understand it is very sensitive to different cables. I have seen some completely flat cable (sorry, can't remember the make) but would like to hear anyone's opinions. By the way, I had Naim cable with my old system, but as good as it is, it is too bulky and inflexible for my proposed setup.

Many thanks,
Tom

Tom, the new i series allows you to use any cable you like which is a bonus.

The older naca 4 was quite sllim line if you can get hold of some.

Other wise nordost have the heaven speaker cable which is dead flat, but that is expensive.

The Nait5i (not the Nait5) is designed to work with a broader range of cables. If you're looking for something fairly flat and low cost, try DNM Reson. It has been used by people on here with good results. QED also do a flat cable which might be worth trying. If you're in the UK, Signals HiFi will loan you cables on a home-trial basis and are very helpful http://www.signals.demon.co.uk/index1.htm

Guys, thanks for the replies.

Garyi - cheers, but 2x10m of the Nordorst heaven cable comes to about £1500 - almost as much as the hardware setup! Nice cable though, thanks for pointing me to it, but I'm thinking more like £200 - £250 for 2x10m.

David - thanks for the info. The DNM Reson is getting more into my price range. I am in the UK. I'll be sure to ask my dealer (Audience in Bath) if they will let me try different cables at home.

If anyone else can help I'd appreciate it.

Cheers,
Tom

JCC, Perhaps you didn't see the original requirement -

Note: he wants to lay it under the carpet, not dig a trench beneath the floor Wink

Tom,

I use the install version of Chord Rumour. This comes without the external white jacket and comfortably fits between the gripper rod and the skirting board. It costs about £10 per metre so it's right on your budget. I also think it sounds pretty good.

Can anyone explain why this is the case? Did Naim fit a Zobel network in the output stages of the 5i? This would explain the increased flexibility for cables, but it would also wreck the sound. As I read that the new 5i sounds very good I'm wondering what they have done to improve the flexibility for cables.

... but my Nait3 has got a Zobel network; it's an inductor that's missing.

Best regards,

I did see the original requirement, David, but thought he could dig a 'small' trench out of the padding. Wink

As Naimgaim suggested, Rega Quattro might be just the ticket!

I have recently replace Nordost Flatline Gold with NACA 5. IMHO the NACA 5 is usefully better (more balanced, whereas the Nordost seemed to enhance the treble) ... but the Nordost was not at all bad and the differences are subtle rather than gross. If the user friendliness of a flat cable is important to you I do not think you will be unhappy with flatline.
