question for all you buffs out there.
Why is upgrdaing the psu of a hifi item so important? whats the principle behind it?

I'll leave it to others to explain the technical stuff. All I can say is that when I was demo'ing Naim kit (200/202), you could hear the improvement of adding a Hi-Cap2 to the system immediately and it was significant. I'm sure a Supercap is even better. I couldn't swing a Hi-Cap2 at the time I bought the 200/202, but it is on my wish list and is a definite future purchase.
Based on your question, I encourage you to get yourself to the nearest Naim dealer, and ask to hear a Naim combo with and without a power supply. The "without" will sound great; the "with" even better.

When an amp is powered by one simple power supply, the various stages of the amp react with one another. This is mainly due to the small voltage changes caused by the power supply current flowing in the circuit board.
Use of a more complex power supply enables each stage of the amp to have it's own dedicated supply voltage. Thus the various stages of the amp are kept stable and independent of each other.
It should also be said that the output signal of an amp is actually a modulated version of the power supply voltage.
Hope this helps

Here is something i've always wondered about. Does the external power supply take over all power functions or does it share duties with the units (cdp or pre or ...) internal power supply.

It takes over. You'll have the apparatus that's being fed completely unplugged from the mains.
The PSU does all the feeding. How it exactly works I don't know, especially when using multiple supplies on a preamp. Must be a great deal of linking and fitting of plugs. Very nicely designed, I must say!
