Help from Native New Yorkers please...

...or those with good local knowledge.

Currently trying to find a reasonably priced apartment in New York for myself and two kids in the last week of October and got to thinking there are a few New Yorkers on this site.

Manhattan seems hideously expensive, so am currently looking at some options in Queens between about $1,600 to $2,000 a week.

If any one has any bright ideas or knows of anywhere around this price which is still within reasonable commuting time of Manhattan, I'd be grateful to hear from you!

Thanks

New York expensive... Think what we must endure when we go to London.....

Have you tried Craigslist? It's tough in NY, as short term rental translates into "deep pocket foreign traveler" for an extended stay.
How old are the kids, are you looking for a two/three bed furnished rental?

It's a while since I went to NY, but I seem to remember my Hotel was less than that!

Cjones,

Yes, I do sympathise with you. I remember staying in a London hotel about 10 years ago. Not only was the price ridiculously high, the room was not much bigger than a cupboard. By no stretch of the imagination am I a large person, but even I kept rolling out of the bed it was so small! The food was poor and the service 'casual' to say the least! My company at the time were paying, but I remember thinking to myself , "My God, I wonder what the average tourist makes of this!"

Thanks for the craigslist idea and the link. The prices seem pretty much in the same ballpark as the sites I've already visited so looks like I will have to bite the bullet. My kids are 14 and 17 - so we need 3 separate beds for sure and preferably 2 bedrooms, but we could do sofa beds or such like. Whilst we don't need luxury or huge amounts of space, we like to have a bit of independence.

djftw,

I have enquired about hotels and they all came out more expensive. Remember I would need two rooms plus possibly the cost of one single supplement. The price of $1,600 to $2,000 per week is per property not per person.

Thanks for the replies
