A cheap, decent and most imptly.. black tuner?

Posted by: silklee on 18 October 2003

Guys,
I was thinking of adding a tuner to my sistem. I dont want to pay too much for it so that more or less rules out Naim.
Any recommendations?

I have a Denon - paid £100.00 for it yonks ago - its wired upto a decent aerial tho - good sound for the pound... think the model is TU260L

Marantz are also very good for cost effective tuners. I bought an ST48 about 4 years ago for about £100 (no remote though) and for the money it's really excellent, but does need a decent aerial like all tuners, put even the best tuner on the end of a crappy aerial and the results will be disappointing.

Options that come to mind..

The Denon TU260L is always on peoples short list, I have one, and it does a good job on Radio 4 for me. Richer Sounds do it.

NAD might still do a black tuner.

Sony are also known for OK Tuners.

You will find that it is mostly AV Receivers now, with a tuner chucked in for completeness.

What about a DAB one?

The old cliche about having a good outdoor aerial is worth noting - even if the aerial costs more than the tuner!

Good luck

I've been thinking along those lines too from time to time. Mine would have to have a remote too.

Paul,

The Denon TU260LII has remote control, but no remote supplied.

If you have a suitable all-in-one remote, or better still a Pronto it works a treat.

For sound though I consider them adequate, rather than great. I much prefer my old NAD402 tuner for the music.

If non-black is acceptable, look for a used Quad FM-4. Great sound and at a price that should not break the bank.

For black units, consider a used Magnum Dynalab FT-11, FT 101A, FT 101A Etude or the newer MD-90 and MD-100. Late production FT-11 and FT-101A Etude had a remote, The remote is standard on the MD series.

Rotel, Rega and Creek are also worth looking at. Some of the newer models can also be found at a good price on the used market.

Cheers,

If 'valve' is not a dirty word, buy a used Leak Troughline (about £60) and give Tim de Paravicini £300 to rebuild it and add a moden decoder.

Outstanding.

Hi James,
The Tivoli Model one seems a bit too expensive for a Mono Tuner, and i was thinking of hooking it up to my main system.

Andy - I haven't heard a Denon TU260LII, but I'm going to have a look (and I've got a Marantz/Pronto remote :-)).

Geofiz, 7V, James - Quad, Troughline, Tivoli sound like good advice (maybe paint the Quad black?)(:-)).

Ive just found a couple of tuners for sale with Audio T. A Denon 260L11 new price 120 SH 69 but I think you can do better than that. In their Cheltenham branch they have a Rotel 950BX in black reduced from 350 to 149 sounds like a bargain? Worth a look at anyway.

Hi guys,
found a used 'Musical Fidelity T1 Tuner'. Is it any good? About 85 pounds or so.
