Jools Holland

Playing his new "...& his R&B Orchestra" CD. Some people like them (including myself), some look down their noses at them (not sure why).
Don't be put off by the 'Country' theme, it's essentially more of the same with excellent work by the band and largely terrific performances from the friends. Very good played loud of course.

Know what you mean but no, he doesn't.

I went to see him a couple of years back and although he was alright, there was no "performance" as such, it was just a guy playing a piano in a band. There was no excitement or passion that I detected. It was all a bit cold.

Well I like it.

Saw him 7 or 8 years ago (!!!!) at Thetford Forest, and he was great - plenty of commitment and atmosphere. Venue dependent? Or just riding on a crest of a commercial wave now? Or gone off the boil, like 'Later...'?
Have to say, though, don't care for Sam Brown's vocal presentation overly much (a bit limited, strident and grating), Ruby Turner is excellent (and has been since I first saw her in Sheffield in '84)!

Have seen Jools and his band at least half a dozen times in recent years. I think the venue does have an effect. I think it works best indoors (Basingstoke Anvil and Royal Albert Hall are where I've seen him).
A couple of his outdoor gigs have seemed slightly perfunctory (Petworth Park and Kew Gardens). Part of the issue may be the punishing schedule of gigs which Jools and the band follow, especially in the outdoor festival season. I suspect they have to work that hard because of the economics of keeping an ensemble of that size economically viable.
I agree about Sam Brown's voice to an extent. The trouble is she tends to have to bellow to be heard in the uptempo numbers. On the other hand, I have seen her give very affecting live renditions of "Valentine Moon", a ballad which suits her range well I think. Ruby Turner is indeed, if you'll excuse the pun, a gem.

Can't say I have really taken to his music. He is a nice enough guy as I met him years ago. But I watched him and his orchestra last night on Later and he always seems to have that Boogie Woogie right hand even when he is playing Country. Al Jackson the drummer with Booker T was generally considered to be one of the best rhythm/feel drummers because of what he didn't play. Wiyh Jools I always think that he overplays everything. But that is my opinion.

Saw Jools play on Later last night. I can only assume there was a last minute cancellation.
The man cannot sing, and should not be allowed to do so on t.v.
Lucinda Williams was magnificant, the Killers weren't bad, but Jools just made me cringe.

I say lynch him. He's simply not fit to walk the Earth.

No need to get upset Jamie.
I think JH has his own thing going on and he is not one to compromise on that - so we get what we get, like it or not, and he's probably playing for his own enjoyment first and foremost. That's fine, nothing wrong in that, but it probably limits his appeal. I'd love to have a go at producing Later, I'd narrow down the number of bands each night and have more in-depth sessions, plus the customary interview would last more than 90 seconds.

I like his show - but I do find him annoyingly smug.
