Neat Elite
Posted by: Simon Perry on 13 August 2002
Hi,
For some time I've been searching for a satisfactory speaker to use with my CD5/P25/112/150/FC2 system. I demo'd the Mystique some time ago but was more impressed by the Elite, which I heard more recently.
What are people's views as to the suitability of this speaker for my system? I suspect they are going to be hard to drive, plus I've a large listening room and need a speaker that will fill it.
Thanks for any comments people may have.

Hi Simon
I have a pair of Neat petite's that I have been using with my Nac72 HiCap Nap180 for about seven years. I was told that Neat did the initial development using Naim amps. My living room is around sixteen feet square and is filled easily.

I live in Scarborough. When you want to buy the Mana amp stand please contact me. We can place the order together, that way it is cheaper on the shipping. My email is nguyent@aecl.ca. I know Robert as well and he is a right guy to ask for help with HiFi.

Robert Fulton's shop was broken into a few days ago, and enough stuff was stolen that owner of the shop (not Robert, unfortunately) has decided to close it down. Robert intends to shift to working full-time on his distribution business (Neat, Royd, etc.)

Having the technology such as computer applications to help in design (including design of speakers) of things in life are great. It should be considered as advanced method in combination with experience, etc. Do not think that people who knows how to apply computer aid in design have no taste or skills required to produce good products.

Hi Brian,
welcome to the forum. I'm thinking about getting Neat speakers, too, for my 102 / hi / 180. However, I wondered whether you have been able to compare the Elite with the Vito. If so, any observations?
Secondly: how are these Elites of yours set up? [Much as I admire your pictorial contribution Vuk, the idea that you're buyimg a Mana stand which you then have to drill holes through is kind of funny. So one needs Mana minus?]
Thirdly: having a good time in Austin, TX?

Hi Vuk
hehe I love my mullet system (CD3/102/hi-cap/250, B&W 805S) and a little Mana stand too (laughs). It sounds great (to me). Actually, I am planning to get a better CD player soon but the Naim products are 2 century behind the current technology.... I am waiting to see what they can do to keep up. I may go for the Meridian CD player at the end of this year (my X-Mass gift to myself). Just for the side information, I am a nuclear safety engineer and do write and use lot of computer programs (mostly CFD programs) to assist design/modification of various safety systems.

Hey Vuk
You use Leica camera?? Is it a M or a R system? I use the R6.2 and my favourite lens is the 50 mm f2. Expensive taste Vuk!

Glad to hear that you are moving to Toronto
We should get together with Mike (Hanson) often in the future. Mike and I we visit each other many times and we comduct many listening tests using Naim equipment in the past. Speaking about photography, I am quite good at it too but it seems that you are more advanced. When you are moving?

But it's really not too favorable. It's kind of like: I like 'em, but love 'em I don't. The reviewer liked the Petites better.
I was most interested in the reviewer's observation that Elites should be positioned well away from the wall - whereas I thought they were among the few speakers that were able to hug the wall - as in Vuk's picture.
On the other hand, the HiFi+ article is a veritable carnival of grammar, syntax and spelling bloopers, so why care what the guy says if he can't say it correctly?

Hi Brian,
thanks for your comments. I have to say if Starbux is the worst thing that's happened to Austin then I wouldn't worry too much.
Next time I'm visting I'll come and knock on your door, Texas kinda style.
In the meantime keep on posting, 'cause your posts are good.

Dubya? Oh, well, you can't win them all... Imagine though, having to spend four or eight years with Al at the wheel. Big snore - which is why he didn't win with sufficient margin. (Though I kind of liked his wife, sassy gal, and a marvelous dancer, as I recall from the Clinton inauguration.)
Pray what are Blue Sparkle Ludwigs?

Why do your Mana Soundbases have glass instead of the boards?
Mine have boards because John Watson's own advice is to use them and not glass except when your speakers don't have spikes.
I presume that the Elites are spiked, no?
I agree that floorstanders under 2000 GBP generally need Soundbases under them to tighten up the bass.
Regards,
Steve.
Let your ears do the talking, let your remote control do the walking...

Thanks for all your comments folks. I'm definitely going to give the Elites a demo at home.

Boring is good......when the guy in question has the proverbial "red button" on his desk.
Better than this!
No more side political rants, I promise.

Well, Steven, thankfully I'm not Vuk, but my stands also use glass and if you
click here you'll see why. The problem with a glass speaker interface is that you have to be much, much more precise with the tuning of the glass. However, it's a FAR bigger improvement than boards on the stands are - and you've heard this - remember your claim that you were hearing the 'best bass you'd ever heard' from my P/G's? Well, the Mana custom stands with my mod have to take a lot of the credit for that.
