RFI Interference from Plasma tv?? Help needed please...

Posted by: Steve2701 on 28 February 2004

I have just read a rather disturbing piece about Plasma tv's causing a lot of RFI which can cause substantial interference with audio..
I have a new plasma arriving in a few weeks, and I was today about to install it's seperate mains spur from the same consumer unit that is installed for the audio system.. Should I do this or leave it running from a spur from the household consumer unit?? This is something I know little about, but I dont want to go spoiling somethong when I have just spent a huge amount of time and effort putting in 12 dedicated 10mm lines to all the rest of the audio equipment!

get the plasma on the same consumer unit as the hi fi you will be feeding its signal too
do it the other way and you will theoretically be connecting your two consumer units together thru the plasma interconnects
I KNOW IVE DONE IT !

Neil,
Thanks for the speedy reply, much appreciated. If I'm reading it correctly your saying I should connect the plasma to the same consumer unit as the audio because any interference will also travel through the plasma interconnects in any case? & I thought this was going to be oh so easy....

On top of what has been said i would add the following question?

Do you really need the plasma on when you are lstening to the HiFi?

I turn mine to standby (no picture/ received transmission so no RFI).

Incidentally mine is quite close to the HiFi (see here: http://www.stud.uni-karlsruhe.de/~utij/NaimInFr/geoff4.htm ) but when it is turned on and showing a programme I do not hear any difference in the HiFi.

Hi Geoff! Nice system, my plasma will be at least 3m away from any amps, but less than 6 inches from the centre speaker?
As for listening to the Hi Fi i agree, it will be on standby, but my concern will be when it's switched on and watching with surround sound via the dvd5 av2 etc?

Hi all.

In my experience of this problem I couldn't get my gear far enough away in the room (24x15). My equipment is about 7ft away from the plasma.

Geoff, you have some terrifc equipement there and I see that it is Series 5 equipment - I only had the problem through the NAP140/NAP180 Olive boxes connected to the AV2 with old SNAICS. There was no buzz for instance through the centre speaker attached to the NPV175 even if I held the speaker on top of the plasma - however doing that did generate a huge buzz through the speakers attached to the other older amplifiers. However all is now ok with the later interconnects.

For information my electrician installed an above ground temporary dedicated spur to the equipment and no matter what you plugged in to what that made no difference.

Steve2701, I will be getting the DVD25 and don't antipate any more problems.

STEVE

are you running seperate systems, i dont im using unity gain on the 552
like you i have 12 dedicated spurs for the hi fi side but my plasma was on the house main as was av2
the interconnect must have been transmitting interferance from one main to the other
when av is not selected on 552 no interference was present

Not intending to run seperate systems... just want this one to work correctly after this much effort being put in! Have asked for my older 32.5 to be serviced, ( Hi Cap & 250 will be done asap when new caps are available!) and looks like new leads will be added to the system then as well.
Thanks to all for the advice here, I wasn't expecting this little problem to arrise, and hopefully it's been solved before it occurs now!
